CNN star Jim Acosta has been criticized for holding up a sign praising his own achievements live on air.

The 53-year-old, who gained national attention for regularly clashing with newly elected President Donald Trump, waved the sign live on Thursday.

Before doing so, he spoke directly to viewers about press freedom, saying, “(President Biden) warned that the free press in this country is crumbling, I would like to add that this can only happen if we, the people, let that happen.

‘Journalists are there to seek the truth, to tell people’s stories, to raise voices that might otherwise go unheard.

“To shine a light on injustice and hold the powerful accountable, we are not the enemy of the people, but the defender of the people.”

The 53-year-old then held up a bright pink sign that read: “I’m marching for Jim Acosta and a free press.”

Acosta added, “A woman sent me a sign eight years ago, which she carried here during a march in Washington.

“She wrote on the back of the sign to me and the press here in DC, ‘You have our support.’ To Nora, wherever you are, back to you.”

Acosta has come under attack for the clip he shared Thursday, with people on both sides of the political spectrum taking aim at him.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald shared the clip, adding, “This downright partisan bastard really thinks he is the conscience of America.

‘I have never seen such a momentous, hypocritical blow in all my life. And no, I’ll never get over the fact that he wrote a book that was bought by stupid liberals and portrayed himself as endangered.”

Another person added: ‘You are not ‘us the people’. You represent an industry that is more interested in putting forward a point of view.

“Until you start serving ‘we the people,’ you must continue to slide into irrelevance.”

Another wrote: ‘There is no one in this country who is interested in what you have to say. Sorry dude.”

“That you talk about the free press and at the same time embrace the left-wing censorship of recent years is pure irony,” said another.

The book Greenwald was referring to was released by Acosta in 2019 and was titled “The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America.”

In it, he described conversations he had with Trump’s then communications director, Hope Hicks. The president called him “very fake news” in a 2017 interaction.

The reporter said in his report that Hicks called him and said Trump wanted to let him know he was “very professional today” after the incident.

Acosta’s heated back-and-forth with Trump went viral and resulted in Trump telling him to “sit down” as aides wrestled the microphone from his hands.

Trump said: “CNN should be ashamed that you work for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN.”

The comments Biden referred to in his on-camera piece on Thursday were the result of the outgoing president’s farewell address.

Biden said there was a “dangerous concentration of power” and added that the “free press is crumbling.”

‘Editors are disappearing, social media is giving up fact-checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and profit.”

In his speech, which lasted about 20 minutes, Biden did not mention Trump by name but said he “wished for the success of the new administration because I want America to succeed.”
