‘If I put myself on £10 I won’t make any money’: Clarkson’s Farm star Kaleb Cooper says he ‘pays himself 50p an hour’ as he highlights farming issues

Clarkson’s Farm star Kaleb Cooper has said he “pays himself 50 pence an hour” when highlighting the problems in agriculture on Friday.

The farmer, 24, who rose to fame in the TV show starring Jeremy Clarkson, has since started his own business and has bought eight calves.

In a recent interview, he explained the cost of feeding the animals and that he has to take a low wage to make a profit in the end.

Kaleb told the Perfomance People podcast, “When I work for myself, when I feed my calves, I bought eight calves, it’s kind of a new business idea that I do.

‘And then you give them milk – which costs me about £200 a calf – and then you sell them when they’re nine months old, trying to make a profit, to see if it will work, you know. ‘

He added: ‘But I recently calculated how much my hourly rate is. I pay myself 50 pence an hour so I can make money. But if I set myself at £10 an hour I’m not making any money, I’m losing money on the calves.’

Kaleb stars as one half of the unlikely double act that is a big part of why Clarkson’s Farm is such a hit on Amazon Prime Video.

The show, which follows Jeremy’s attempts to manage his own 400-acre plot after his previous farmer retired, recently broke viewing records.

The season 2 premiere of the farming show was watched by 4.3 million viewers Barbthe official public research group.

The numbers made it Amazon’s highest-rated show since the company began reporting ratings in November 2021, beating the hit The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which launched on the platform last year with 3.2 million viewers.

The show also beat TV’s heavyweights last week with audiences larger than Love Island and the BRIT Awards.

Earlier this week, Kaleb shared a sweet post of him hugging son Oscar as they watched the Amazon show together.

Under the photo, Kaleb wrote: ‘Clarkson farm s2 on ✅ now time to relax after a busy day.

“Oscar loves Clarkson’s farm, that’s all he wants. Thank you so much for the sweet messages ❤️. Cider in hand for refreshment, of course.’

Returning to Diddly Squat after the first series in June 2021, Jeremy, his sober girlfriend Lisa and sympathetic assistant Kaleb take on a series of challenges including Brexit delays, council battles, badger enemies and a plan to open a restaurant.

CLARKSON’S FARM SERIES TWO: The Reviews

THE PROTECTOR

‘Infectiously funny’

Judgement: Who is All Quiet On The Western Fronts leading man

It would be too much to say that Jeremy Clarkson is complex, or an enigma. It contains no crowds. But he does have the disarming ability to present different versions of himself. At one end of the Clarkson spectrum is the right-wing bully columnist, at the other is the host of Clarkson’s Farm, a perfectly enjoyable reality show featuring celebrities who are out of their depth. It’s something the man’s many, not-incorrect opponents might have thought him incapable of doing: harmless fun.”

INDEPENDENT

“Jeremy is a wonderfully eloquent and charismatic advocate for national issues”

Judgement: Who is All Quiet On The Western Fronts leading man

“Those with low Clarkson tolerance will have a hard time with Clarkson’s Farm. It’s full of Clarksonisms and wacky pomposity… But what Clarkson understands – always has understood, from the early days of Top Gear – is that there’s a sweet spot of made-up reality, somewhere between Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the News at Ten ‘

STUFF

‘The UK’s favorite biting antediluvians are still making addictive television’

‘Clarkson’s Farm continues to delight, showing the now 62-year-old a softer side, while still proving himself as hot-tempered, unstoppable and irresponsible as ever… Throw in some cleverly and humorously chosen classic soundtracks (featuring everyone from The Who to Simon and Garfunkel) and, love him or hate him, you can’t help but be fascinated by Clarkson’s efforts to transform his farm into something that is both profitable and sustainable’
