Gerald’s condition had been kept a secret from fans of the show until the latest series, which filmed last year, aired on Amazon Prime today.
At the end of the first episode, Jeremy received the heartbreaking news during a phone call with what is believed to be Gerald’s wife.
Clarkson revealed more details about Gerald’s cancer diagnosis in the second episode.
He told viewers: ‘Gerald had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Something Kaleb and I discussed while trying to do what our absent friend normally does.
Jeremy said: “I’ve been calling on the phone, doctors and things I know, and his odds are really good, but they’re scaring the hell out of him.” Kaleb responded, “He doesn’t understand, you know that.”
Jeremy added: ‘I know he doesn’t understand and he’s baffled because, for obvious reasons, someone said, ‘Look, I’m sorry, it’s cancer,’ and that’s all he heard. He’s desperately upset, terrified. Poor man.’
Kaleb then praised Gerald for how “strong” he is, adding that he has “worked on the land his whole life.”
