The head of the city’s watchdog is under fire for revealing the identity of a whistleblower.

Ashley Alder has been charged with breaching the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) code of conduct for allegedly violating the confidentiality of a former employee who complained about opaque hiring practices.

He forwarded emails revealing his name, address or concerns, the Financial Times reported.

The worker was sacked for alleged misconduct and lost an employment tribunal, but is appealing and has accused the FCA of “incompetence”.

An FCA investigation is looking into whether allegations of misconduct should be formally investigated internally.

The regulator said: “This is an exceptional case. The senior independent director will review how it was handled.”
