The rapid rise of Cieren Fallon Jnr through the jockey ranks continued on Newmarket on Saturday when he landed the Group One Darley July Cup on Roger Teal trained Oxted.
It was a first top-level victory for last season’s champion learner. The success came not only on his third stage group race, but also on one of the few grand prizes that eluded his six-time champion jockey father Kieren Fallon, who won 16 classics.
Father and son, who share a Newmarket home, had run together before the race, and 21-year-old Cieren admitted that while grateful for all of his father’s advice, he would enjoy a rare chance of sole proprietorship.

Cieren said, “I have one on him now. He helped me today and told me how to ride Oxted. He said, “keep it simple and stay straight and make sure you get him into the dive well-balanced.”
“Oxted is a good horse and he goes to places. I was just a passenger on a good horse. I always remember what my father says.
“Tonight will be interesting. I will definitely unwind it. He went to America, but he kept looking around and I can’t thank him enough. ‘
Fallon snr said of his son’s arrival in the weighing room, “He is so confident. I wish I had half of his confidence when driving. ‘
The younger Fallon said he would laugh with his father, but praised him for giving advice
It’s only been 10 months since Oxted Fallon Jnr delivered his biggest win in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster.
The gelding also delivered his first group winner in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket last month.
The length and a quarter win of Skeptical’s 12-1 shot, with favorite Golden Horde a neck further back in third, was also a huge first win for Group One in Teal’s career.
Teal said, “Cels gels with the horse. We supported him and the boy was fine. ‘
