The truck was from Faith Chapel Assembly of God in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant John Lueckenhoff did not know specifically where the group was going, but was told it was an "exit for young people."

The van had 13 passengers, mostly teenagers, but some adults, Leuckenhoff said. All aboard were injured or killed when the truck ran off the road, hit a tree and overturned. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

"Absolutely awful," said Lueckenhoff.

The 10 injured victims were taken to hospitals in Bolivar and Springfield, about 30 miles to the south. Three were in serious condition. Lueckenhoff said he did not know if any of the injuries were life-threatening.

The passengers of a second said that a tire exploded in the first truck and the driver lost control after a trailer connected to him began to collapse.

The cause of the accident was investigated by a road patrol shock team.

It was said that a second church van had been following the first, explained Polk County coronel Melissa Britton.

The passengers of the second van said that a tire exploded in the first van and the driver lost control after a trailer connected to it began to collapse.

The driver of the second bus, a nurse, rushed to help the injured in the crash.

"After the fact, those people met while they waited in the hospital," Britton said. "They are an incredible group of people." They were comforting and helping each other.
