While the plot for the upcoming fourth installment in The Matrix franchise has been kept largely secret, more details about the cast are being revealed.

According to a recent casting announcement from Warner Bros. reported by Collider, Christina Ricci is the latest actor to be added to the highly anticipated sequel, tentatively titled The Matrix 4.

As of now, the details of her character are unknown, but she joined an already star-studded cast that includes no fewer than five franchise favorites, including Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss.

Since the sci-fi action movie wrapped up the main shoot in November 2020, Ricci’s role has either been part of the storyline the whole time and kept quiet, or she was involved in some extra scenes during post-production.

The Matrix 4 is co-written, directed and produced by Lana Wachowski, who co-directed and wrote the three previous films with her sister Lilly Wachowski.

Ricci, 41, previously worked with Wachowski in the sports comedy film Speed ​​Racer (2008).

In addition to Reeves (Neo) and Moss (Trinity), the cast of originals also includes Jada Pinkett-Smith (Niobe), Daniel Bernhardt (Agent Johnson), and Lambert Wilson (The Merovingian).

Ricci stars alongside newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra and Jonathan Groff, among others.

Most recently, Ricci scored one of the lead roles in the upcoming coming-of-age drama series Yellowjackets (2021) and the show Cinema Toast by the Duplass Brothers (2021).

Due to the corona crisis, the original premiere date of May 21, 2021 has also been postponed twice.

The Matrix 4 is now scheduled to be released in theaters and streaming simultaneously on HBO Max in the United States for one month starting December 22, 2021.
