CHRIS SUTTON: The special is DONE … Tottenham is crumbling under Jose Mourinho, whose once dazzling charm has been replaced by an irritable gloom

  • Tottenham fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Man United on Sunday
  • Jose Mourinho claimed Spurs played well, but any supporter will see they didn’t
  • The Portuguese boss once operated with charisma, but his charm has disappeared

When Jose Mourinho came to this country in 2004, he was a funny, smart, charismatic Portuguese guy who promised to take the Premier League by storm.

He delivered on that promise, quite brilliantly. But that man is gone.

The Mourinho who won three titles with remarkable charisma has been replaced by a Mourinho who puts three fingers at the world and frowns.

He is a frustrated, confrontational, irritable figure and lives on glories from the past. There was no glory in Sunday’s performance, despite Mourinho claiming that Tottenham played well against Manchester United.

They didn’t, and any Spurs supporter watching from home knows that.

That’s now 10 league defeats for Mourinho – the first time he’s reached that total in a campaign in his career.

Sunday night he came out with, “I can’t say what I’m thinking.” That was not the case last week when we heard him blame the team after Tottenham drew 2-2 in Newcastle.

That comment from ‘the same coach, different players’ will not have fallen well in the dressing room. It doesn’t inspire the troops to run through brick walls for you.

Taking the Spurs job was never going to be easy, but Mourinho isn’t making it a success.

Luke Shaw flew past the wing in front of him. What a transformation we have seen in England, left back.

He excels under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He collapsed under Mourinho. And that is what is happening with this Tottenham team now.
