Chris Sutton criticized the decision to award Rangers a penalty in the Old Firm Derby after Fabio Silva was initially ruled to have dived and received a yellow card.

The Wolves loanee, who had drawn Sutton’s ire for his theatrics throughout the game, fell to Greg Taylor’s challenge midway through the second half.

Referee John Beaton immediately showed a yellow card for simulation, but was then told by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

After having another chance to watch the action, he reversed his decision and gave the hosts a way back into the tie, which they took advantage of with a confident James Tavernier penalty shot.

Sutton called the call “embarrassing” after saying Silva’s fall to the ground was an example of “blatant cheating.”

“The more you see it, the more you realize it’s been launched,” Sutton added on Sky Sports.

Silva appeared to already be descending before his thigh came into contact with Taylor’s flailing leg.

A frantic few minutes ensued in the affair as the home team thought they had equalised, but it was subsequently disallowed after a foul was detected in the build-up.

Celtic had gone ahead in just 21 seconds thanks to Daizen Maeda’s rare goal before Matt O’Riley doubled their lead before the break.

The home team will hope to overtake their arch-rivals at the top of the league standings heading into the final six games of the campaign.
