CHRIS SUTTON: Only four Manchester United players make my combined XI with Arsenal… but Sokratis and David Luiz do not get in as defenders should stop goals, not gift them!
- Arsenal players dominate my combined XI with opponents Manchester United
- Alexandre Lacazette or Marcus Rashford would be included in my team if fit
- Rob Holding is the only man worthy of partnering Harry Maguire at centre-back
- Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira are superior to anyone in United’s midfield
For those of you wondering why I haven’t named Alexandre Lacazette or Marcus Rashford in my team, it’s because I only picked players who are fit for Monday night’s match.
For the rest of you wondering why I haven’t named Sokratis or David Luiz, it’s because I’d like my defence to stop goals, not gift them!
Look, there is never an exact science to selecting these combined sides. Sometimes, you have to shoehorn players in. So let’s go through my picks, from back to front.
Chris Sutton’s Manchester United and Arsenal combined XI includes newly fit Kieran Tierney
David De Gea beats Bernd Leno, because he is the better all-round goalkeeper right now.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire are two of the few players that Manchester United can celebrate this season. I believe Maguire will prove money well spent, but then I had to pick a partner to play alongside the £80million summer signing. Crikey.
Who do I go for? Victor Lindelof? No. Sokratis? No. Luiz? No. Thank goodness Rob Holding is fit, because that means he gets my vote here.
Thank goodness Rob Holding is fit; the only centre-back worthy of partnering Harry Maguire
CHRIS SUTTON’S MAN UTD AND ARSENAL XI
David De Gea, Man Utd
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Man Utd
Harry Maguire, Man Utd
Rob Holding, Arsenal
Kieran Tierney, Arsenal
Matteo Guendouzi, Arsenal
Lucas Torreira, Arsenal
Nicolas Pepe, Arsenal
Paul Pogba, Man Utd
Dani Ceballos, Arsenal
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal
TOTAL – Man Utd 4-7 Arsenal
To complete the back line, I’ve then gone for Kieran Tierney. The £25m man from Celtic is lacking in match fitness but of all the left backs available, he stands out.
My midfield two is then made up of Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira, because they are better than anything United can offer in that area.
That does not mean I’ve forgotten about Paul Pogba.
I like what the attacking side of his game, so I’ve placed him further forward at the centre of my three.
On his right is Nicolas Pepe, and on his left is the creative Dani Ceballos. If Lacazette wasn’t injured, he’d be in my team, for sure.
If Rashford was fit, he might make it, too. Up front, though, I would always have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
SCORE PREDICTION – 2-1 to Arsenal
