Chris Rock jokes he’s finally got most of his ‘hearing back’ after being slapped by Will Smith
Chris Rock has joked with fans that he finally “gained most of my hearing back” after Will Smith slapped him at the Oscars.
The 57-year-old comedian appeared on stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Thursday as part of his Ego Death comedy tour.
Joking to the 5,000 viewers who were expecting a series of jokes from Smith, he opened the show by saying, “I’m fine, if anyone was wondering… I’ve got most of my hearing back.” The London Times informed.
The audience was soon disappointed when Rock continued, “People expect me to talk about bulls**t, I’m not going to talk about it now.”
Smith, 53, had brutally beaten Rock at the Oscars in March after the comedian told a joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Rock made a GI Jane joke, referencing Pinkett-Smith’s ongoing battle with alopecia, prompting her husband to take the stage and viciously slap the comedian.
The violent outburst caused an uproar on social media and resulted in Smith being banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years.
Chris Rock has been touring the world on his Ego Death tour and on Thursday at London’s Royal Albert Hall he discussed Will Smith, abortion, his love life and Meghan Markle in the first of his four UK shows.
Rock, 57, said he didn’t want to talk about the time Smith, 53, slapped him at the Ocars (pictured), but he continues to drop tidbits here and there on his Ego Death world tour.
Rock, however, indicated to fans that he would ‘eventually’ talk about it ‘on Netflix’ and claimed he wouldn’t talk about the moment until he ‘gets paid’ and sees a check with his name on it.
On Thursday at the Royal Albert Hall, he fueled interest in the incident again by finishing his talk about the banned actor, saying: “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
Rock also brought up the moment during a surprise Dave Chappelle show in Los Angeles, where the two opened up about their recent onstage altercations.
Chappelle, who was viciously attacked by 23-year-old Isaiah Lee at a Hollywood Bowl show in early May, jokingly told Rock that he at least got “punched by someone big name.”
“I got hit by a bum with leaves in my hair,” Chappelle said on May 5.
Rock jokingly replied, “I got hit by the softest nigga that ever rapped.”
Other celebrities, like Family Feud host Steve Harvey, 65, even joined in on the fun, telling Georgia State University students that Jada Pinkett-Smith would have moved if Smith had slapped him.
‘you slap yourself [Texas megachurch bishop] TD Jakes will turn the other cheek. do you slap me? If you lean back in your seat, Jada will have to move away from her. That’s the kind of Christian I am.
‘I am a Christian, but I am really underdeveloped. I don’t have a high-level Christianity. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m like a 2. That’s the level of Christianity I can work at,” he said.
He, like many others, criticized Smith’s backlash as a “punk move” and said he “lost a lot of respect for him”.
Rock recently joked with the 5,000-strong audience at the Royal Albert Hall that he had “most of my hearing back” after being slapped at the Oscars in March.
Rock recently joined Dave Chappelle (pictured together at the Hollywood Bowl) twice onstage at two shows, joking about Smith twice.
At the Albert Hall show on Thursday, the first of four British shows, Rock discussed other big issues, including the upcoming Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, joking that he paid enough, reported The Times, poking fun at her love life and Meghan Markle’s ‘political bullshit’.
He reportedly claimed it was not “racist” for the royal family to ask how dark the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children would be because other black people would want to know, too, The Times reported.
He even joked about UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 57, who was recently seen partying with his Downing Street colleagues during lockdown. Rock said that he “would like to party with Boris Johnson”. [But] I wouldn’t let him run a McDonald’s though.
