Chris Pratt addressed the controversy surrounding his casting as Mario for the upcoming animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, during an interview with YouTube gizmodo which was released on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old actor, who is set to voice the popular video game character, was joined by his costar Charlie Day for a sit down, as they discussed various aspects of working on the film.
The actor, who recently attended the premiere of the new Netflix series Unstable, is set to star alongside artists like Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen in the soon-to-be film.
During the interview, Pratt expressed his understanding that longtime fans of the Mario series were particularly invested in the character’s integrity.
You totally get it, man. There is an enthusiastic fan base and I am a fan. I get it. Mostly, people don’t want something like this to be messed up. They are precious about it. They are keen. And I am grateful for that.

The Jurassic World Dominion star then noted that he had gone out of his way to faithfully represent the Nintendo character while working on the feature.
“I care just as much as everyone else to make sure they don’t get screwed,” said the performer.
Day went on to explain why he felt as if Mario fans were particularly concerned about the film’s representation of the characters.
“In many ways, the game took care of people, I think, in a way that they don’t want to spoil the franchise at all,” he said.
Pratt went on to discuss his personal history with the Mario series, which began with his encounters with the original Donkey Kong arcade machine during his early years.
My first memory is the arcade. And shortly after that, maybe in six months to a year, the NES came out and we had one in our house and boy, yeah, the rest is history, he said.
The couple was eventually asked about an upcoming film that would serve as a launching pad for a film series, and the two stated that although no plans are in place, they would be open to the idea.
“I think it was understood that it might be the case,” Pratt said, “but I actually didn’t think that far.”

Development of the Super Mario Bros. movie began in the mid-2010s, and it was confirmed that the project was in production in 2017.
The video game franchise was previously the basis for the Super Mario Bros. franchise. of 1993, which starred Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper.
The film was a critical and commercial failure, though it has gained a cult following in the years since its release.
It was revealed that Pratt and Day were cast as plumbers during a Nintendo Direct that took place in September of 2021.
Other cast members in the feature include Fred Armisen, Keegan Michael-Key, and Sebastian Maniscalco.
Charles Martinet, who regularly voices Mario and Luigi in the video game series, will also appear in the film.
The trailer for the movie was revealed to the public during a Nintendo Direct show that took place last October.
The Super Mario Bros. movie is currently set to arrive. To theaters on April 5.
