The Game Of Thrones star has revealed that he lost 26 pounds to realistically portray Dior’s emaciated appearance when he returned to Paris after World War II.

Maisie stars in the 10-part Apple TV+ series The New Look, which focuses on fashion designers Christian Dior and Coco Chanel during World War II.

The series also explores the never-before-told story of Catherine, the younger sister of fashion designer Christian Dior, whose character in the biopic is based on the book Miss Dior by Justine Picardie.

Catherine was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo in July 1944 after joining the Resistance and becoming a key member of a covert network collecting intelligence for the Allies.

She was imprisoned by the Nazis in the Ravensbrück concentration camp and in order for Maisie to accurately portray her emaciated appearance in scenes set after the war, the actress underwent a harsh transformation.

Supervised by medical professionals, Maisie has revealed to Harper’s Bazaar that “he ate very little.” He managed to lose weight primarily by sweating liquid right before filming, a technique boxers and jockeys use before competing.

“I had to get up at four in the morning to start sweating,” he explained. ‘The night before, around 7 or 8 pm, they allowed me to have something salty and dehydrating: some smoked salmon and a glass of wine.

Then I took a very hot bath with lots of salts. And I kind of levitated into bed and slept for about three hours, and I woke up and ate a handful of nuts.

“At this point I couldn’t sleep through the night. I would wake up and feel like a marble in a bottle, spinning around…’

The first images Maisie was almost unrecognizable in her close-up as Mendelsohn’s on-screen sister.

The series will make its global debut with the first three episodes on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 on Apple TV+, followed by one episode every Wednesday through April 3.

The intertwined saga follows the surprising stories of Dior’s contemporaries and rivals, from Chanel to Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga and more.

It also offers an insight into the workshop, designs and clothing created by Christian Dior through collaboration with the House of Dior.

The series’ soundtrack is produced by Grammy Award winner Jack Antonoff and includes covers of popular songs from the early and mid-20th century performed by artists such as Bleachers, Florence Welch, Lana Del Rey, Matty Healy (The 1975), Beabadoobee , Nick Cave, Perfume Genio and more.

The March issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK will be on sale from February 8.
