It’s Easter weekend, which for many people can only mean one thing: lots and lots of egg-shaped chocolate.
But one chocolatier has taken a step forward (or more than a step) by creating something much more extravagant.
Brighton-based chocolatier Jen Lindsey-Clark created the Cumberbunny after recognizing it had a huge following.
She revealed how the actor/rabbit hybrid came about after a collaboration with a props company inspired her to make the egg.
Writing on her blog, Jen said: “In 2015 my son Ted started school, I had a little more time to focus on my career and business.”
The decadent, skilled treats cost £55 each – but fans think they’re worth every penny of the price.
She adds that she was running a baking business called She Bakes at the time and was trying to specialize more in chocolate work.
When the opportunity to work with the sculptors and prop makers at Plunge Creations presented itself, she was “thrilled.”
“After receiving a call from them asking for chocolate help in making this 6ft tall, 44kg piece of chocolate.”
Benedict Cumberbatch’s life-size chocolate sculpture was created for a accessories company to make for UKTV for an Easter promotion.
According to Jen: “It was to be displayed at Westfield shopping center to celebrate the launch of Drama on UKTV’s on-demand service.”
She adds that it took three weeks and more than 100 hours of chocolate art work to complete the project.
The statue was then placed on a plinth in Westfield, making it “a pleasure to watch the public marvel at its luxurious elegance and rich aroma.”
She added that some couldn’t resist a small bite of the tasty statue.
The treats are first created in a specialist mold, then perfected by hand, before being coated in copper powder.
Jen now makes a much smaller version of the chocolate Benedict in the shape of a rabbit – a hybrid of Benedict’s face with the body of a rabbit.
The chocolate – known as Cumberbunny – is available on its website for £55 and comes in milk chocolate and bronze-coated dark chocolate.
Speaking when the egg was invented several years ago, Jen said MetrokUK: ‘Everyone loves a bit of Batch! He’s an interesting character.
“He’s a great actor and an English gentleman and he also makes the most of his celebrity status by being able to express his political views and make the most of his moment in a very cool way.”
