A chocolate-loving grandmother was buried in an M&M-themed coffin she designed and built as family members said goodbye dressed as the sweet treat.
Mary Ester Stocks Martin Gailey built the themed coffin alongside her son to commemorate her 30 years as a language and literature teacher and the nickname given to her by her students to match her initials ‘MM’.
Gailey’s classroom was filled with M&M themed trinkets from gifts she received from students. Her family honored her obsession and she donned the M&M outfit to her funeral in Arizona on Saturday.
“Her only regret was that she wouldn’t be able to attend her own funeral to see people’s faces,” Lisa Richardson, Gailey’s daughter-in-law, wrote on Facebook.

Gailey’s coffin featured a huge blue M&M in the center containing several smaller candies imprinted with the names of her children: Steven Douglas Martin, William Gary Martin, Cindy Elaine Roundtree and Thomas Dan Martin.
‘M&M’s were their theme. she was a teacher for 30 years and her initials were MM so her student gave her M&M souvenirs until she had a whole room full of them,” Richardson wrote.
Bill Martin, told Esquire Middle East, that the former teacher designed it in honor of her students.
“The coffin is a tribute to the more than 5,000 students he taught throughout his career,” Martin said. We will miss her.
Gailey’s former students attended her funeral and remembered that she was their ‘greatest support’.
“She always, ALWAYS, believed in me, and I got to see her every week for the past few years,” James Owen wrote. And in the most Maryy thing in the world, he asked to be buried in a giant M&M.
Owen recalled his close relationship with Gailey through his ‘unbreakable’ friendship with his mother. He remembered singing at his wedding to Hugh Gailey and the little gestures from him.

Gailey’s only disappointment was missing out on the reaction from funeral attendees, her family joked.

Gailey’s grandson, Roundtree Scott, shared photos of the burial with the caption: “You were right (grandma), we all loved your coffin.”
Scott mourned the loss of Gailey earlier this month in a grief post while sharing some of his favorite memories.
You fought very hard. I miss you so much,’ Scott wrote on Facebook. “I’m going to miss the popcorn, the Rice Krispies, and most of all, those hugs.”
Gailey was also a swimming teacher before retiring in 2000.
