Chloe Madeley has revealed that the last year of her marriage to James Haskell was “horrible”, “dark” and “painful”.
James, 39, and Chloe, 37, who married in 2018 and share two-year-old daughter Bodhi, confirmed they had split in a joint statement released in October last year.
The daughter of This Morning presenter Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan has now told why she will never go into too much detail about why they split – but said her daughter was her main motivation for leaving the marriage.
she said the sun: ‘When you tell people that you are going to get divorced, everyone sees it as something very negative.
“They say, ‘This is going to be very difficult for you.'” And yes, it is, but the hardest thing was when we were married. The last year of marriage was horrible. It was very dark, painful and one of the worst periods of my life. It’s good that we finished it.
‘It was incredibly scary. I’m surprised I got through it the way I did. I think more people should see it as a positive thing. “I am very proud of myself and very relieved to be done for the day.”

James, 39, and Chloe, 37, who married in 2018 and share two-year-old daughter Bodhi, confirmed they had split in a joint statement released in October last year.
She added that she will never go into detail about what caused the separation to protect her daughter and her parents from the “dark and painful experiences” she has gone through.
But Bodhi was the main reason she left her marriage, as she didn’t want her daughter to grow up seeing their relationship and thinking it was normal.
Chloe has started dating again but “nothing feels right” yet as she admitted James has been seeing other people and “having fun”.
James and Chloe split last October.
The couple, who had starred in their own ITV reality show, Chloe Madeley: A Family Affair, announced: “Chloe and I have mutually decided to separate at the end of September 2023.”
“We had not planned to make a statement at this time – certainly not while the TV show was airing – but, unfortunately, constant speculation about our marriage has forced us to do so.”
He added: “Beyond this statement, we will not be speaking publicly about this matter and will request privacy at this time.”
‘Our only focus now is our beautiful daughter. “We will continue to co-parent with nothing but love.”

She said in a new interview: ‘The last year of marriage was horrible. It was very dark, painful and one of the worst periods of my life. It’s good that we finished it.

Sharing his own statement on Instagram, James added: “It is with great sadness that I write this post, but unfortunately, in the world we live in, it has to be done.”
‘My priority is the happiness and safety of my daughter and Chloe. For that reason, I will not comment further.”
In May this year, Chloe opened up about how her split from her ex-husband “was f***ing horrible” and gave insight into their relationship.
Chloe admitted the couple broke up because they both wanted their relationship to “stop being horrible” and “miserable.”
After their split, the couple still lived together in their north London home and were often seen together with Bodhi as they tried to be as friendly as possible with their little girl.
Although some fans thought the two got back together because of this, Chloe previously confirmed that they had both moved on, adding that she hopes the former England player finds someone soon.
She said: “It will probably happen to James long before it happens to me, if it hasn’t happened already.”
“I’m waiting for the conversation to happen at some point.”
Tensions were high before the couple split, with Haskell even claiming that Chloe treats him “like a dog” and compared their relationship to “World War III.”
On an episode of his reality show before their split was announced, Haskell complained, “She shushes me like I’m a dog or a baby.” I say, “Shut me up again and that’s the last thing you’ll do.”
She went on to explain: “The difficulty in the relationship between James and I comes from the fact that we both think we’re in charge.”
Bodhi was the main reason she left her marriage, as she didn’t want her daughter to grow up seeing their relationship and thinking it was normal.
‘(In) relationships that I know are very calm and calm there is a dominant (partner) and a submissive (partner).
“James and I are both dominant, so obviously it’s like World War III.”
During the recording of her podcast, Chloe revealed that she and Haskell attended couples therapy in a bid to save their marriage.
She explained: “We went through a really tough time during lockdown; our marriage was really tested,” prompting Haskell to joke: “It’s not much better now!”
