China is using artificial intelligence and fake social media accounts to spread division and distrust in the United States ahead of the presidential election, according to a stark new warning from Microsoft.

As Election Day approaches, Chinese cyber operators are expected to deploy artificial intelligence to create sophisticated, deeply fake online videos featuring fake “news reports” and fake anchors.

The tech giant said Beijing is “redoubling efforts” to disrupt the election and is currently using fake online polls to decide which issues divide Americans most.

He will then post AI-generated memes, original images, and infographics to cause more discord, most likely related to immigration, race, and drugs.

Microsoft Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) CEO Clint Watts said: “China is using fake social media accounts to poll voters about what divides them most to sow division and possibly influence the outcome of the presidential election. of the United States in his favor.

“China has also increased its use of AI-generated content to promote its goals around the world.”

Operatives linked to the Chinese Communist Party have already “opportunistically jumped” on news events in the US.

That includes the prolific group known by the names Storm-1376, Spamouflage or Dragonbridge, Microsoft said.

Following the train derailment in Kentucky in November, the group urged people via social media to consider whether the US government deliberately caused the accident and was “hiding something.”

He also spread a conspiracy theory that the August 2023 Maui wildfires were deliberately set by the US government to test a “climate weapon.”

Other misinformation has included accusing the United States of poisoning water supplies in other countries to maintain “water hegemony.”

“In recent months, there has been an increase in survey questions,” Watts said.

“This indicates a deliberate effort to better understand which demographic of American voters supports which issue or position.”

Chinese agents are using the polls to determine “which issues are the most divisive ahead of the main phase of the US presidential election,” he said.

He added: ‘These accounts post almost exclusively about domestic issues that divide the United States, such as global warming, US border policies, drug use, immigration and racial tensions.

“They use original videos, memes and infographics, as well as recycled content from other high-profile political accounts.”

Microsoft already saw a rise in AI-generated Chinese content aimed at influencing the presidential election in Taiwan in January.

It was the first time Microsoft identified a nation-state actor using AI to influence a foreign election.

“With major elections around the world this year, particularly in India, South Korea and the United States, we assess that China, at a minimum, will create and amplify AI-generated content to benefit its interests,” Watts wrote.

Microsoft also said that North Korea has started using AI to steal cryptocurrency.
