At least 19 people, including eight children, were treated for burns after a fireworks explosion set costumes on fire at a carnival in the Dominican Republic.

The injured were standing next to a stage for the start of festivities in the northern city of Salcedo on Sunday afternoon when the fireworks inexplicably went off.

Shocking videos captured the moment victims were dancing in the middle of a street when one of their costumes was set on fire. The person could be seen removing parts of his outfit before the flames spread.

Others ran around the streets engulfed in flames as horrified bystanders watched and did their best to throw water and ice to save the victims.

Another contestant could be seen rolling on the pavement and standing on their feet frantically trying to remove their costume as the flames spread uncontrollably.

Carnival goers rushed to the person’s aid, dumping a bucket of ice and bottled water to bring the fire under control.

However, the victim ran down the street in the hope that the flames would go out. Another injured attendee near them fell to the ground as Good Samaritans used shirts to try to put out the fire.

The victims were rushed to trauma hospitals in Santiago, San Francisco de Macorís and Santo Domingo.

Eight of the injured suffered second- and third-degree burns, Listín Diario newspaper reported.

“The incident, which is under investigation by the authorities, took place moments before the start of the carnival,” spokesman for the National Police of the Dominican Republic, Diego Pesqueira.

‘The pyrotechnic devices directed their course towards a crowd that was there.’

The remaining festivities at the carnival, which were due to end on Sunday, were cancelled.
