Chilling cold that will freeze the US: more than 235 million people in danger zone

Millions of Americans are bracing for life-threatening cold temperatures this week as freeze warnings spread across the country. National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center has warned of wind chills that will drop to 30 to 55 degrees below zero in the Rocky Mountains, northern Plains and upper Midwest through Tuesday morning.

The below-freezing wind chill is forecast to extend south to the south-central Plains and east to the Ohio Valley on Wednesday. Additionally, “numerous frost warnings” have been issued for the Gulf Coast and northern Florida, where the cold could damage sensitive vegetation and exposed pipes, particularly in areas not accustomed to harsh winter conditions.

Temperatures could drop as low as -50 degrees Fahrenheit in some regions, creating widespread disruptions. “Cold air will have far-reaching impacts on daily life and the economy,” said Haley Taylor, AccuWeather meteorologist. Expected effects include strain on power grids, school closures and health risks. said Daily Mail.

Extreme weather has already influenced major events: President Donald Trump’s inauguration was moved inside Washington, DC, to avoid injuries from the cold. “I didn’t want to see people hurt or harmed in any way,” Trump said.

Forecasters predict cold conditions will persist across the eastern and southern United States for several days. Parts of south Texas and southeast Georgia are bracing for sleet and freezing rain, likely causing travel disruptions. Southeastern states and the Gulf Coast also face the threat of a winter storm, AccuWeather reported.

The American Red Cross has urged residents to stay home or seek warmth in public facilities such as libraries, shopping malls or warming centers. Those venturing outdoors are advised to wear layers of loose-fitting clothing, a coat, hat, gloves, waterproof boots, and a scarf to cover your face and mouth.

The organization has also encouraged checking in on loved ones and neighbors, especially the elderly or those who live alone. You can find information about shelters on the Red Cross website or by calling 1-800-CROSS RED.

Governors of affected states have issued warnings and shared resources. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp urged residents to take precautions ahead of icy conditions, while Colorado Gov. Jared Polis highlighted warm shelters for residents.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety emphasized the importance of emergency car travel kits, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear encouraged vigilance as the state prepares for more severe winter weather. As the country prepares for these dangerous conditions, officials and organizations are working to ensure residents stay safe and warm.
