Three mothers and six of their children, all members of the LeBaron family, were killed by cartel guns on Monday while traveling in a convoy of three SUVs in the Mexican border state of Sonora.

Six children were injured in the attack and five of them have since flown to hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona for treatment. Three other children were not injured and stay with relatives in Mexico.

Relatives had posted photos on social media of the blood-soaked children who were comforted by relatives in a Mexican hospital before being transferred.

Authorities have also released images of the children flown in with the help of the Mexican Air Force.

One of the boys who had not been injured in the attack was credited with rescuing his injured younger family members after the 13-year-old had covered them with branches to hide them from the cartel shooters before running back home for help.

The murdered mothers rode in separate vehicles with their children from the religious community of La Mora where they live, a decades-old settlement in the state of Sonora, founded as part of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Rhonita Maria LeBaron and four of her children – her six-month-old twins, Titus and Tiana, her 10-year-old daughter Krystal and the 12-year-old son Howard – were all killed.

A video posted on social media showed the charred and smoking remains of their vehicle full of bullet holes.

Family members say that Rhonita drove to Phoenix with her four children on Monday to pick up her husband at the airport after his work trip.

Family members told DailyMail.com that her car broke down after she had blown up a tire. She returned to their community to buy another car and left again shortly before the other two mothers left.

Archers opened fire and set fire to her vehicle, causing the gas tank to explode. She was murdered with her four children.

Christina and Dawna traveled in separate SUVs with their own children.

They were en route to see relatives in the state of Chihuahua for a wedding scheduled for Friday, relatives told DailyMail.com.

The slaughter of American citizens on Mexican territory quickly became an international issue in which President Donald Trump promised Tuesday to help Mexico wage war against his drug cartels.

& # 39; This is the time for Mexico to wage war against the drug cartels with the help of the United States and wipe them off the face of the earth, & # 39; tweeted Trump.

Obrador, however, refused that approach and said: & # 39; The worst thing you can have is war & # 39 ;.
