Chief health officer announces his shock resignation

Queensland Chief Health Officer John Gerrard announced his resignation from the state’s top health job in December.

Premier David Crisafulli confirmed that Dr Gerrard tendered his resignation on October 13 on an interim basis while the state election was underway.

“He has made a great contribution and wants to continue to do so, but now, on the front lines, we want to thank him for his service,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“We want to thank him for his contribution during a really difficult time for the state and we really wish him the best as he returns to the front line to do what he has done his entire life; we certainly wish him all the best.”

Dr Gerrard’s last day in office will be December 12.

His contract was up for renewal, but in early October he informed the CEO of his intention to step down as health director.

Dr Gerrard was appointed chief health officer in December 2021, following the resignation of Jeannette Young before becoming Governor of Queensland.

He will return to full-time clinical duties after three years in the top role.
