The Chicago Sky fired Teresa Weatherspoon less than a year after hiring her for the job

The Chicago Sky fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon less than a year after hiring her to head the Windy City WNBA franchise.

The Sky’s biggest star, Angel Reese, posted on social media that she was “heartbroken” by the news of Weatherspoon’s firing.

After being hired in October 2023, Weatherspoon led Chicago to a 13-27 record, one spot shy of the WNBA playoffs.

‘I’m heartbroken. “I’m literally speechless knowing what this woman meant to me at such a crucial time in my life,” Reese said. ‘She was the only person who believed in me. The one who trusted me.’

‘Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black woman in sports when no one believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances we went through this year and when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU.’

The Sky’s biggest star Angel Reese said she was “heartbroken” when she found out about the firing.

‘You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short time that will last forever. I will never question God why he brings people into my life and away from me to the extent that I need them, but I have always believed that everyone is in your life for a reason and a season.’

‘You were the best reason and season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Spoon.’

The Sky missed the postseason for the first time since 2018, the final year of Amber Stocks’ tenure.

Weatherspoon is one of the pioneers of the WNBA, having played for the New York Liberty from 1997 to 2003 and the Los Angeles Sparks for one season.

It’s unclear who Sky are turning to, especially with a young core that appeared to coalesce around Weatherspoon in his first season in charge.
