They plan to go on tour in May and June 2024 in recognition of this month, which marks 21 years since they and the late Sarah Harding won Popstars: The Rivals.

However, the group has not recorded new music, but rather plans to celebrate its extensive catalogue.

Cheryl revealed in November that they had been discussing plans for some time, but put the idea on ice when Sarah, who died in September 2021, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She said in a statement: “We all started talking about the possibility of doing something to celebrate Girls Aloud’s 20th anniversary a few years ago. The anniversary seemed like an obvious thing we would celebrate.

‘But when Sarah became ill, all priorities changed. She passed away a year before her anniversary and she just didn’t seem right to me, she seemed too soon to me.”

The group plans to use the tour to “celebrate” their late friend.

Cheryl added: “But now I think there’s an energy that makes it feel good.” It’s the right time to celebrate Sarah, it’s the right time to celebrate the band and the right time to celebrate the fact that we can still do this 21 years later. “It is a great honor in many ways.”

Kimberley said: ‘Over the last year, we’ve felt this outpouring of love, obviously towards Sarah, but really towards all of us as a group.

And I guess it’s reignited something in all of us. “It feels like something has changed and it feels like the right time to celebrate Sarah and the 20th anniversary that we didn’t celebrate at the time.”

The group hopes fans enjoy the tour as much as they do.

Nadine said: ‘Girls Aloud are a band that had such a huge impact on people’s lives. We grew up with the band, but so did a lot of other people.

“So for us not to do something again is a shame and a waste. “We want to have that moment with the fans where we can all enjoy it together.”

Nicola added: “I think what’s really encouraging is that every time people ask us about getting together it’s not: ‘Would you ever do it?’ but ‘When are they going to do it?’ Knowing that we still have the love of our fans and the people who watched us grow gives us the confidence to do the tour.

‘It will be a massive celebration of everything we have done up to this point. We want people to walk away saying, ‘Wow, I just had one of the best nights of my life.’

Girls Aloud originally formed in 2002 on ITV’s Pop Stars: The Rivals and rose to fame, achieving 20 top ten singles and five BRIT Award nominations.

Girls Aloud initially took a break in 2009 to pursue other projects before disbanding for good in 2013.

Sarah tragically passed away two years ago, aged just 39, after a battle with breast cancer.

After her time on Girls Aloud, Sarah starred in Coronation Street and moved on to Celebrity Big Brother in 2017.

In 2020 she announced that she had breast cancer and that it had spread, before publishing a memoir in 2021 titled Hear Me Out.

Kimberley Walsh is currently a regular presenter on Morning Live and was a finalist on Strictly Come Dancing, as well as starring in several West End productions including Shrek, Elf and Big.

Nadine Coyle continues to release music and tour successfully, headlining festivals across the UK.

Nicola Roberts is known for her solo music career, songwriting and winning the first season of Masked Singer UK in 2020 as Queen Bee, as well as her work advocating for a ban on under-16s sunbeds in the United Kingdom.

Cheryl has especially remained in the spotlight over the years, due to her position as a judge on X Factor, her tempestuous love life and, most recently, her appearance on 2:22 A Ghost Story.
