Australian journalist Cheng Le has returned to Australia more than three years after being arrested in China.

Ms. Cheng was working as a journalist for state broadcaster CGTN when she was accused of providing state secrets abroad.

She had rejected the allegations and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said her release was the result of the conclusion of legal proceedings against her in China.

Mr Albanese said Ms Cheng had reunited with her family in Melbourne and he had spoken to her earlier in the day.

“I of course spoke to her about her recent message to the Australian people.

“But she’s a very strong and resilient person. And when I spoke to her, she was delighted to be back in Melbourne.

“The government has been asking for this for a long time and his return will be warmly welcomed not only by his family and friends, but by all Australians.”

The Prime Minister said Ms Cheng was greeted at the airport by Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
