Thomas Tuchel has urged Chelsea ace Timo Werner to ‘trust his instincts more’ and to stop ‘overthinking’ opportunities.
Werner came from RB Leipzig last summer for £ 53 million too much fanfare, but has endured a mixed season for goal after a number of glaring misses.
Another gilded opportunity passed him by against Real Madrid and, after being questioned about the big money signing, Tuchel asked Werner to stay positive.
Timo Werner has been urged by Thomas Tuchel to keep his head up and trust his instincts
‘Are we happy if he misses an opportunity, like in the previous game? No, ”Tuchel said in his press conference ahead of the game with Fulham.
Do we want more goals? Yes. Does he want more goals? Yes.
‘It’s not about quality. It’s about confidence and momentum. It’s about relying more on his instinct and not thinking about it too much.
Chelsea boss Tuchel admitted that Werner needs to score more goals after a string of costly misses
It’s easier said than done. I have never scored a goal in my career. When I did it was like birthday and Christmas on the same day.
He has to keep his head up. This is what he does, this is what he used to do.
What is the worst case scenario if the next opportunity presents itself? That he misses the opportunity. Billions of people never get the chance to seize. So take the next opportunity. ‘
The Champions League semi-final accident summed up Werner’s woes and was the type of mistake that caused his eleven goals in this campaign to disappear under the radar.
Werner’s first season after his £ 53 million move from RB Leipzig has been marred by glaring mistakes
Christian Pulisic grabbed his teammate for a simple shot after nodding the ball over the goal to give Werner what appeared to be a simple tap from six yards.
However, the next attempt was released with little conviction and Thibaut Courtois reached out with a swinging leg to keep it out.
The last missed opportunity has underscored the fact that no Premier League player has been more different in all competitions this season than Werner.
With 23 ‘big’ missed openings, Werner tops the unfortunate list ahead of Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Patrick Bamford.

Extraordinarily, teammate Thiago Silva’s wife took to social media to berate Werner after failing to hit the back of the net in Madrid.
Silva’s partner, Isabele, claimed that Werner ‘keeps missing goals’ and said he ‘doesn’t want to score’.
She filmed a video for her Instagram story saying, ‘This is karma, guys. Every team I go to is a striker who keeps missing goals… this Werner, what’s his name? ‘
In a second clip she added: “We need a goal, we need to win this game, but my forwards don’t want to score, I don’t know why they don’t score.”
