Ashley Cole will take over as England’s interim manager from Lee Carsley for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
Carsley has been confirmed as Gareth Southgate’s interim successor and Cole is a strong contender to be the former Everton midfielder’s No.2.
Cole is widely regarded as one of England’s greatest defenders of all time and his presence in the dressing room, given his seriousness, is seen as a huge boost.
The FA have yet to confirm Cole’s appointment, but it is understood there is a strong possibility he could become part of the England coaching team.
Carsley and Cole have worked together for the England Under-21 team.
Confirming Carsley’s appointment until potentially October, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said: “Lee is a fantastic manager who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with the majority at international or club level.
“He offers us a very solid interim solution and we are confident that he will perform well in the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
“We are grateful to Lee for taking over management of the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”
Carsley said: “It’s an honour to step up and lead this England team on an interim basis. As I know the players and the international football cycle very well, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process of recruiting a new manager.
“My main priority is to ensure continuity and our aim is to achieve promotion to the UEFA Nations League.”
Eddie Howe is among the leading candidates to be named permanent head coach, but if Carsley impresses during his audition he could emerge as a realistic candidate for the job.
