Chelsea gets fuel in their £ 110million chase from Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, while Diego Simeone says ‘hopefully he can continue with us’ when questioned about his goalkeeper’s future
- Jan Oblak is reportedly Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper this summer
- Blues are looking for a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga after a difficult season
- Diego Simeone is ‘not surprised’ about interest in Oblak, but hopes he stays
- The manager’s statement will set Blues on edge in their £ 110 million chase
Diego Simeone has sparked hopes for Chelsea in their £ 110m goal for Jan Oblak after Atletico Madrid manager said he was ‘hopeful’ that the Slovenian would remain if he questioned his future.
Blues boss Frank Lampard is on the hunt for a new man in the woods after a tough season for Kepa Arrizabalaga and is reportedly ready to make a big offer for the Atletico shot stop.
Oblak is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world in his six years with Atletico and a report in the mirror suggested the Blues wanted to make an exchange deal with the pair.

Diego Simeone says he is ‘not surprised’ by the left, but hopes the Slovenian will stay
Simeone added that while interest in the goalkeeper comes as no surprise, he hopes Oblak will stay in the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.
“I’m not surprised, every year our main players are sought after by the best in the world,” Atletico boss told the media prior to Thursday’s match with Getafe.
“It’s normal to always look for the best – and we have many. Some have left and others have stayed.
“I am not surprised that Chelsea admires Jan Oblak, he is a decisive player for us. But he’s the captain and our participation in the Champions League helps us keep our best players every year, so I hope he stays with us. ‘
“It makes sense and normal for everyone to want Oblak. He is our captain and an important player. I hope we can count on his work, which is huge for Atleti. ‘
The Blues are looking to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga after a difficult season
Oblak signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid in April 2019, keeping him in the Spanish capital until 2023 and increasing his release clause to £ 110 million.
Sportsmail reporter in Spain Pete Jenson recently noted that Chelsea adding Kepa to their offer will not see Atletico give way to that price tag, meaning a swap deal for the pair is unlikely.
Kepa is still expected to head to the exit door at Stamford Bridge after some high-profile mistakes this season and a lack of consistency since joining Athletic Bilbao for £ 71 million in 2018.
Simeone sees Oblak as his precious possession, but the financial consequences of the pandemic may make Atletico more inclined to accept a large offer when it comes.
