United are close to agreeing the sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for 70 million pounds.
The move will pave the way for Atletico to sell striker Samu Omorodion to Chelsea for around £35m in a separate deal to the £33.7m sale of Conor Gallagher.
Gallagher will arrive in Madrid on Tuesday to sign a five-year contract with Atletico after agreeing to the transfer on Monday morning.
Chelsea are also attempting to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli, while young defender Alfie Gilchrist is heading to Sheffield United on loan.
Chelsea are also close to signing Gremio midfielder Gabriel Mec, 16, for £20m.

The Blues have held talks with Atletico over a possible move for Omorodion as they look to add attacking options to Enzo Maresca.
Omorodion is part of the Spanish team at the Olympic Games and found the goal against Egypt in the group stage.
AC Milan, Roma, Napoli, Nottingham Forest and West Ham are among the other clubs interested in the striker.
Omorodion joined Atlético in August 2023 after signing a five-year contract.
He was later loaned to Granada, with whom he scored eight goals in 34 LaLiga games.

Chelsea have informed Gallagher that it was best for the academy product to move on, and the midfielder is set to sign a five-year contract with Atletico.
Gallagher had been open to staying at Chelsea but wanted a longer-term contract than the offer he received of a two-year deal with the option of a further year.
The London club have also been in talks with Napoli over a deal that could see the Blues sign striker Victor Osimhen, while Romelu Lukaku could join the Serie A side.
The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for Osimhen in recent seasons, with the Nigeria international having shone in Italy.
Chelsea have also been interested in offloading Lukaku permanently after having the Belgian on loan for the past two seasons.
Osimhen has made a huge impact at Napoli since joining in a club-record £80million move from Lille in 2020.
The forward has scored 76 goals in 133 appearances for the club and played a key role in their Serie A title win in the 2022-23 season.
Osimhen had signed a new contract in December, extending his contract with Napoli until 2026.
The deal saw Osimhen receive a significant pay rise, while his release clause would have risen to €130m (£113m).
