Chelsea have asked for free goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha in case Kepa Arrizabalaga leaves on loan.

The 27-year-old, formerly of Lazio, has been a target for Fulham, who want Arsenal’s Bernd Leno instead.

Kepa has played second fiddle to Eduoard Mendy between the sticks since his arrival in 2020, making just four Premier League appearances under Thomas Tuchel last season.

The Spaniard has failed to deliver on his £72million fee and could decide to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, provided a buying club meets the Blues’ asking price.

In the event that Mendy needs a new substitute for next season, Chelsea see Strakosha as ‘one of the options’ to replace Kepa.

The Albanian goalkeeper started last season as number two behind Pepe Reina, but has played every Serie A game since December 5, keeping seven clean sheets in 23 games and Lazio finishing fifth.

Chelsea’s interest will be a blow to Fulham, who reportedly approached a deal with Strakosha last weekend.

Manager Marco Silva is keen to add top flying experience between the sticks before Fulham return to the Premier League next campaign.

While Chelsea holds the draw of Champions League football, Fulham could more easily tempt Strakosha with the prospect of being a first-choice at the club.
