A cheating police officer and her lover ‘went berserk’ and attacked her husband after he caught them having sex in a Screwfix car park, a defense lawyer said.

PC Stephanie Glynn, 40, and Acting Inspector Andrew McLullich were seen naked from the waist down by Gavin Harper in a Kia 4×4 parked in the car park of Screwfix in Birkenhead, Liverpool.

Former Merseyside police officer Harper is accused of stalking his estranged wife by bugging her car, taking her phone, hacking into her social media and downloading her Snapchat story following the breakdown of their relationship in 2020.

He is also accused of unlawfully wounding Ms Glynn’s new partner, Mr McLullich, after he caught the pair having sex in the car park on February 16, 2021.

At his trial at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, his lawyer Suzanne Payne presented a different version of events. She said: ‘When Harper opened the back door (…), Mr McLullich realized what was happening and he became enraged.

‘He turned around and he started punching Harper in the face, so much so that Harper fell backwards into the side of the car.

“Then Mr. McLullich got out of the car, stumbling because his pants were still around his ankles, and when he pulled them up, he lunged at Harper.”

She added: ‘Harper fought back and punched him. Then Harper stopped fighting. He had no fight left in him. He started taking the hits.’

Pictures of Harper’s badly bruised and bloodied face were shown to the jury. But Mrs Glynn said: “I would suggest they are self-inflicted because that is the type of person he is.”

Ms Payne said Ms Glynn’s evidence, in which she said Mr McLullich did not try to fight back or run away as Harper ‘hit him over and over again’, was ‘nonsense’.

Ms Glynn claimed Harper then got down on the ground and removed a tracking device from his car and that Mr McLullich ‘flew’ at him when he tried to take it.

But Ms Payne said the acting inspector was actually looking for Harper’s phone, which he allegedly used to film the pair having sex in public.

Ms Payne said: ‘You (Glynn) shouted ‘get his phone, get his phone’. You were frantic to get Harper’s phone because you knew that recording could seriously damage your career.

‘While Harper was on the floor, Mr McLullich continued to punch and kick him. Then you (Glynn) jumped in. You kicked him to the side.’

Ms Glynn denied this and maintained her earlier claims that she saw Harper hit Mr McLullich ‘at least twice’ over the head with a torch. She said: ‘At the end of it he (Harper) had a little bit of blood on his forehead but it wasn’t dripping down his face like Andy was… He had no injuries at all.’

Harper, of Ailsa Road in Liscard, had been in a relationship with Mrs Glynn for 10 years before their marriage became troubled in 2020.

In October, Ms Glynn began communicating frequently with Mr McLullich, who was also married, on WhatsApp and Snapchat, exchanging more than 900 messages in just two days. Harper noticed that his wife had become distant and confronted her, but she denied having an affair.

He is accused of stalking Ms Glynn, causing serious alarm and distress, by bugging her car and allegedly following her to Bedston Hill, where the defense said she met Mr McLullich. On 15 December 2020, he took her mobile phone and downloaded her Snapchat history, revealing the dates and times she had communicated with Mr McLullich.

He denied she caught Ms Glynn’s arm in the window of her Ford Mondeo as she reached into the vehicle and tried to snatch her phone back. He also refused to drive away while her arm was inside, causing her to fall into the road.

It was said that a GPS tracker Ms Glynn found on her car on December 20 had been placed there by Harper some time ago ‘purely for security reasons’ and that he had a similar tracker on his own vehicle .

The court heard that Ms Glynn only reported Harper’s behavior after Harper himself contacted Merseyside Police and claimed she and Mr McLullich had had sex while on duty. On January 17, 2021, she texted a friend that she was “smoking” and “nice” with Harper after he reported her to the Department of Professional Standards.

When her friend asked her if she wanted to report Harper for stalking, she replied: ‘I don’t want to, but it might be necessary if PSD comes knocking.’

Ms Payne said: ‘The only reason you said he was stalking you is because you knew the PSD would get involved.’

She added: ‘You said you were harassed, that you were seriously disturbed by Harper’s behaviour, to depart from the assault that you knew Mr McLullich inflicted on him. You were concerned about whether professional standards were involved. You came in first because you caused these injuries and it was an attempt to divert from the truth.’

Mrs Glynn denied this. She said she didn’t report Harper at first because she wanted to protect him and because she was afraid of him.

The trial continues.
