Channel Nine viewers were stunned to see a meteorite falling from the sky as the evening news bulletin ended.
Queensland weather forecaster Garry Youngberry was giving the forecast for Wednesday night’s State of Origin decider in Brisbane when a meteor lit up the sky behind him.
Dressed warmly in an all-brown suit, Youngberry warned Origin fans heading to Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium to wrap up warm to protect against the unusually cold 8C wind chill factor.
Seconds after making his prediction, the shooting star was seen falling from the sky.
Nine later shared a video of the dramatic moment online after it was spotted in the newsroom.
It was also seen by the most attentive viewers during the broadcast.
“My 10 year old tried to tell me he saw that behind him (Youngberry) and I was like ‘pfft! You didn’t!’ LOL,” one wrote.
Another added: “I saw this in Greenbank. It’s amazing.”
Meteorologist Garry Youngberry was giving the forecast for Wednesday night’s State of Origin match when a meteor lit up the sky behind him.
A third wrote: “Well how about that? A meteorite observed by a meteorologist.”
Other commentators joked that the meteor’s blue-green flash was a sign of New South Wales’ incredible 14-4 win over Queensland to clinch the series after losing the opening game in Sydney six weeks ago.
The Blues’ first win in three years came in dramatic fashion with a sideline brawl, a penalty unlike any seen in Origin and the 19th man being sent off the field, all against the backdrop of both teams playing one of the most relentlessly physical games in recent memory.
“The whole of Queensland will be blue. Long live the Blues!” wrote one commentator.
Another joked: “That’s what Queensland fans’ hopes and dreams are made of!”
