Nuno Matos, head of personal and wealth banking at HSBC, resigns
HSBC chief executive Nuno Matos is to leave the company after losing his top job.
Matos, head of wealth and personal banking, “decided to resign to pursue other opportunities” after nine years at the lender, the bank said.
He is one of three senior managers whose departure was announced yesterday, before Georges Elhedery took over as chief executive on Monday.
Matos was a favourite to succeed Noel Quinn when he announced his departure earlier this year, but Lebanese-born CFO Elhedery beat him to the punch. Matos, who is Portuguese and based in Hong Kong, joined in 2015 from Santander.
In an internal memo, Matos told staff: “This is the right time to seize new opportunities.” Matos, a member of the bank’s 18-person executive committee, will stay on as an adviser before leaving in 2025.
He will be replaced by Barry O’Byrne, head of the commercial banking division.
John Hinshaw, chief operating officer, and Elaine Arden, chief human resources officer, are also leaving.
