A mother and her two-year-old son have died and her four-month-old baby is struggling to survive after swerving onto the other side of the road from a busy highway.
Katrina Sila, 34, and her son Kai Prahastono were killed instantly when their silver SUV crashed into a cement truck on the Hume Highway, in Menangle Park, south-west Sydney, at around 11:20am on Monday.
Ms Sila’s second child, baby Ivy, was rescued from the wreckage of the car and airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
It is not clear exactly why Ms. Sila’s car crossed from the southbound lane of the freeway into the northbound lane of the freeway, although the accident occurred not far from a small U-turn bay.
“I think it’s hard to think anyone survived the wreckage, such a tragic and high-speed incident,” said Ambulance NSW paramedic Mark Gibbs.

The force of the collision catapulted the SUV’s engine a hundred meters down the road, witnesses said, with a photo showing it lying on the side of the road.
The truck driver was uninjured and will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
Daily Mail Australia understands that both Ms Sila and her grieving husband, Ilham, work in finance.

Ivy was airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital where she remains in critical condition.
A family photo posted online in January shows Ms Sila and her husband smiling as they cradle their son and newborn daughter in their arms.
“We are heartbroken to announce the sad passing of Katrina Sila and her son Kai… a loving daughter, mother, devoted wife, sister and friend to many,” a statement from the family said.
The dramatic accident caused chaos in traffic with the highway closed on Monday.
