Fashion by nature is cyclical, and now more than ever nostalgic styles are in fashion.

According to celebrity stylist, Micaela Erlanger, the early millennia rose from the past and returned to the forefront of fashion.

Responsible for some of the hottest looks from talents like Blake Lively, Lupita Nyong’o, Meryl Streep and Diane Kruger, Micaela reveals today’s retro fashion and how to make it look modern and fresh.

According to celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger (pictured), the turn of the millennium has risen from the past to return to the forefront of fashion.

“This is about early millennials, aka ’90s, early 2000s,” the award-winning stylist reveals to DailyMail.com.

‘Cargo pants, velvet, baguette bags, platform sandals and colored spectacle frames are becoming increasingly popular.’

During Paris Fashion Week, editors and influencers alike strutted around in looks inspired by the decade, with cargo pants being one of the hottest trends.

“When it comes to rocking a retro look, don’t be literal. Look for nuances or hints of a style reference and add a dose by accessorizing with a cute pair of glasses,” shares Micaela.

She donned utility-style beige pants with a matching varsity jacket and completed the look with a matching clutch and retro-inspired sunglasses.

Once designed for comfort and convenience, today’s cargo iterations are not only stylish, but designed to perfection by today’s top trendsetters.

vintage sunglasses

According to Micaela, an easy way to reference the decade is with sunglasses.

“With this era in mind, I opted for smaller frames and reflective lenses to nail the late ’90s/early ’00s look,” he said.

Micaela suggests treating your glasses like a piece of jewelry and thinks tinted frames are a fun way to add a pop of color to an outfit.

She also recommends round and rectangular sunglasses, and is a fan of Eyebuydirect for its wide selection and customization options.

She added a retro touch to the look with bold red Loewe sunglasses and platform pumps.

“In glasses, colored frames are increasingly popular,” says Micaela. 'Eyebuydirect offers over 20 tint options with the ability to customize opacity too'

Platform shoes

Many shoe trends from the ’90s have made a comeback in recent years.

From the Doc Marten combat boot to the Steve Madden slinky flip-flop, fashion-forward teen, tween and adult staples have been all the rage.

Micaela names platform sandals the IT shoe of the season.

The chunky retro silhouette offers more stability than a towering stiletto heel, while its height allows the wearer to feel sexy and powerful.

The star showed off his smart style in green velvet pants, a yellow jacket and a matching newsboy cap.

She accessorized with an orange Bottega Veneta bag and matching peep-toe platform sandals that added inches to her body.

baguette bag

The Fendi Baguette bag was made popular in the 1990s on HBO’s iconic hit TV show ‘Sex and The City’.

Designed to contain only what is necessary, the bag is lightweight, stylish and allows for mobility.

It features a small handle that can be worn on the wrist, or the bag can be tucked under the arm. It’s the perfect style for a girl on the go.

wearing vintage today

As younger generations become more interested in the environment, second-hand shopping (both online and in real life) has become much more popular.

As you browse sites like Poshmark or Tradesy, or rummage through bins and shelves at your local Goodwill, you’re sure to turn up some fantastic and unique retro pieces.

Micaela offers some suggestions on how to incorporate vintage pieces into your wardrobe.

“In general, unless you’re going for an era-specific look, you might want to consider mixing trends to keep it fresh,” she says.

She added: “Avoid looking like you’re wearing a costume by choosing contrasting eras for clothing and accessories.”

For example, pair a pair of 90s-style velvet pants with a structured blazer, crop top, and heels.

‘Either rock a ’70s silhouette like flared pants in on-the-moment colors like pastel pinks, or a 60’s shift dress in 80’s neon.’
