Celebrity hairstylist John Barrett, who worked with Princess Diana and Martha Stewart, dies at 66 of blood cancer
A legendary hairstylist who worked with Princess Diana and Martha Stewart has sadly died at the age of 66.
Born in Limerick, Ireland but raised in London, John Barrett opened his first salon in New York City in 1996 and ran his salon at Bergdorf Goodman for more than 20 years.
A close friend, Julianne Jaffe, revealed that her cause of death was blood cancer according to WWD.com.
Taking to your living room instagram page, his team broke the devastating news to his clients.
The statement read: ‘On behalf of the John Barrett Salon team, we are saddened to announce the passing of our founder and owner, the legendary John Barrett.
John Barrett, who was born in Limerick, Ireland but grew up in London, sadly died at the age of 66 of blood cancer.
‘John would light up any room he walked into with his charm, wit and directness.
“Her superhuman talent was her ability to make anyone who sat in her chair feel like the most beautiful person in the world.
She lived by the phrase: “It’s not just about the hair, it’s about the care.” She cared passionately about her loving family, her salon and her staff.’
The post concluded with a heartfelt message to the salon’s clientele before taking the late stylist directly.
“Now, more than ever, we will come together as the JB family that John so proudly created and nurtured, and we will continue to work hard to keep our customers in New York City and far away looking and feeling their best,” he continued. ad.
‘John – we will always miss you, love you and carry on in your honor and memory. Thank you for everything he has done for us and the beauty industry. Rest in peace our dear friend.

Taking to her salon’s Instagram page, her team broke the devastating news to her clients.
Another said: ‘He gave me opportunities that no one has ever had! Let me run a flat for him when nobody wants to!
‘He’s gone and I still cherish every moment! from the closing in bergdorf to the grand opening of his own place! the sweats and the tears I did it all for him!! from their smoked salmon in the morning to their chicken sandwiches, it was quite an honor and an amazing thing to be a part of! PRAYING FOR THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY AND THE JOHN BARRETT TEAM!!’
While another wrote: “John will never be forgotten what a beautiful legacy he left behind as demonstrated in these comments.”
John has worked with many celebrities over the years, but most notably did Hillary Clinton’s hair, the Olsen twins and Princess Diana.
John previously spoke about working with the late royal in an April interview with page six.



Celebrity friends and friends of the hairdresser were quick to comment to pay their respects.
He said: “I was so nervous that I got to her suite and immediately she was sitting on the bed with my assistant looking at pictures of my assistant’s children.” The conversation was easy.
He went on to tell Page Six that Diana trusted him to ‘just do’ what he liked, which he found discouraging.
And he added: “With someone like that, if he did something bad or wrong, it would be visible to the whole world.”
