Celebrate like it's 2004 with the secret "Retro Razr" mode of the new Motorola Razr

Motorola brings the Razr back in the form of a folding Android phone, but that does not mean that the company leaves the classic design of the original behind. As a nice tribute to the OG RAZR, Motorola has included a secret "Retro Razr" mode that turns the modern $ 1,499 smartphone into the image of its 2004 predecessor.

The mode is in fact a glorified Android launcher with a skin that faithfully recreates the original RAZR UI via software, up to the classic start-up animation. But Motorola has done a serious job here: the skin is fully functional. Click the message button and the Android message app will start. Click on the right to open the settings and the settings app will start. The best part is to choose a phone number that has the same pop-up UI as the original, including the sounds.

And while the entire Razr of 2019 is a giant touchscreen, Motorola has made the retro mode as authentic as possible. The only way to navigate to it is by using the (software) buttons on the keyboard. (You cannot simply tap the address book icon.)

The throwback mode is hidden in the fast settings menu of Android. To find it, you must edit which items appear in the drop-down menu and then drag the Retro Razr button to the menu. Once it's there, just swipe down the way you normally would to activate airplane mode or adjust the brightness and tap the newly revealed Retro Razr button to launch the Easter egg.

Is it useful? Not really. But it is a fun and smart way for Motorola to pay tribute to the original RAZR, even if it goes boldly forward with this new, modern version. (Never underestimate the power of nostalgia.)
