Cathy Areu (Liberal Sherpa) is charged with kidnapping from her mom and stealing.

The self-proclaimed ‘Liberal Sherpa’ who once was a regular guest on Fox News stole at least $224,000 from her 88-year-old mother and physically dragged the elderly woman to a nursing home against her will, Florida authorities said on Friday.

Areu was previously an unpaid guest on Fox News shows up to 2020. She then filed a sexual harassment suit naming Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, a claim that was later dropped by a judge.  

Miami-Dade County prosecutors claim she falsified documents in order to take control over her mother’s home. She also siphoned money out of her mother’s reverse mortgage savings account and savings account and took out credit cards under her mother’s name, which she then used for her own benefit.

‘Every incident of alleged elder exploitation or abuse touches our heart and never fails to shock us,’ Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement.

‘It seems particularly harder to understand when the alleged perpetrator of the exploitation is a daughter, or a son or another blood relative,’ added Rundle.

According to Areu’s Fox News profile, which was later deleted, she was a former contributing editorial editor for the Washington Post Magazine. There she conducted political interviews from 2001 through 2012 and also founded the magazine Catalina in 2001.

Her The bio stated that the magazine was trying to break stereotypes and show the positive side of the US Hispanic population. 

Areu, also known to the public as Cathy Areu Jones hosted the Liberal Sherpa podcast. After Areu’s arrest became well-known, Fox removed Areu’s profile.

Areu was an unpaid regular guest on Carlson’s conservative commentary show in 2018 and she also appeared on other Fox News shows. She defended progressive ideals while chatting with other guests. 

In 2020, she sued Carlson, Hannity and other network members for sexual harassment. But a judge dismissed her suit the next year.

The details of Areu’s arrest have not been released. However, prosecutors claimed that Areu had been evading authorities from June and spent time in Mexico. She Friday, he was held without bond at the county jail. 

Court and jail records don’t show if she has an advocate to speak for her.

Prosecutors say the investigation began in 2019, when state officials received reports Areu was exploiting his mother. 

The mother had signed a paper transferring the mother’s house over to Areu.

They claim Areu also used a revoked powers of attorney to place her mother twice in a nursing home against her will.

In the first instance, Areu allegedly tricked her mother into believing that she was being taken to ice cream with her grand-daughters. Instead, she was taken to a home. 

Area allegedly told staff that the mother tried to call a friend to get help.

After Doctors and officials determined that the woman was competent to make her own decision and released her to go home. However, prosecutors claim Areu and another person physically dragged Areu from her home and took her to another facility. 

The woman was again released after being found competent and asked to return home.

Authorities state that the investigation continues.
