A cat detained in Sri Lanka’s main prison while allegedly trying to smuggle drugs and mobile SIM cards has escaped, media reports said.

The feline was detected on Saturday by prison officials in the highly secured Welikada prison, a police official said.

He said nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip were found in a plastic bag around the cat’s neck.

But it escaped from a prison on Sunday where it was kept, Aruna newspaper said.

The prison authorities did not immediately respond.

The prison has reported an increase in the number of people throwing small packs of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.

Sri Lanka is facing a major drug problem with some anti-narcotics detectives who are also involved in the sale of seized drugs.
