A woman died after falling from a popular clifftop viewpoint.

The woman is believed to have fallen from the top of Castle Hill in Townsville, northern Queensland, at 2.54pm on Sunday.

Emergency services were only able to provide limited details about the death, which was later confirmed by Queensland Police as mental health related.

The Polair Townsville helicopter and Queensland Government Air helped emergency services locate the woman’s body.

A spokesman for the fire brigade and emergency services confirmed that the body had been found at 4pm.

The woman had already died when she was located.

Castle Hill Road has since been closed and the public has been urged to avoid the area.

Castle Hill is an iconic centerpiece of Townsville with stunning 360 degree views of the city.

More than 2,500 locals and tourists visit the landmark and use its walking trails every day.
