Cassadee Pope revealed that she is leaving country music.
The 34-year-old singer, winner of the third season of The Voice, explained that she wants to return to rock and will leave country and the complex history of the genre.
In an interview with Rolling Stone posted on Thursday, explained that he is done with country music and ‘gaming.’
She said she initially became frustrated after feeling ’embarrassed’ for criticizing Jason Aldean’s wife Brittany over a transphobic post in 2022. She also previously criticized Morgan Wallen after he used the N-word in 2021.
The former lead vocalist of pop-punk band Hey Monday also explained that another factor that contributed to her decision was “the genre’s complex and deeply rooted history of racism and sexism.”

“If this is a genre I can’t let go of, I’m just being complicit,” he said.
She explained that she didn’t mean that one genre was better than another, but rather that she made a conscious decision to return to a genre that made her feel more comfortable and at home.
“I realize that every gender has problematic people,” she explained.
“I’m not saying there isn’t a leader in a band who hasn’t been accused of something in rock music,” he continued. “But I guess rock is more in my bones.”
Seemingly referring to what he experienced in the country music genre, he noted the lack of widespread progressive politics and the backlash he received for expressing his opinion.
“You’re not completely excluded or embarrassed for speaking out,” he said.
She also said she didn’t like having to “get along” with mostly male country radio programmers to get her music played.
Pope told the outlet that he hopes to release his alternative rock album sometime in the spring.

He said he feels like he is now “in the right place at the right time” after returning to the genre.
No matter how much he did, he never reached the top of the charts.
“She was so dedicated and determined to look good to everyone,” he recalled.
“Some people I really liked, but others I was told, ‘Oh, this person is expecting friendship or some kind of communication, so if you don’t give it to them, they’re probably not going to play with you.'” he added.
He said that rock music not only suits him better, but also allows him to write and sing about topics such as empowerment and sexual pleasure.
“Leaving a genre where you don’t really hear women sing about that kind of thing or, God forbid, wear anything scandalous, was really fresh and exciting.”
