A frustrated mother has slammed her council for issuing a fine after a garbage truck appeared to intentionally destroy her son’s basketball hoop.

Melbourne mother Renee claims she was fined $2,000 by Casey City Council after reporting the truck driver for hitting the hoop, which was chained to a light pole on the council-owned nature strip , outside his house.

Renee’s son received the basketball hoop as a birthday present, but last month the family filmed their garbage man reversing several times.

“She did it three times and it seems deliberate,” Renee told 3AW radio host Jacqui Felgate on Tuesday.

“The last time she did it, it broke. I called the council and reported the incident.

“They apologized, but two weeks later we got a $2,000 fine and an instruction that it had to be removed. We have some pretty unhappy kids.

Renee refused to pay the first violation notice because the basketball hoop provides her children, as well as many others on their street, with a fun outdoor activity.

“All the kids on the street are playing with it. They’re not inside on their iPad, they’re playing outside on a safe area,” she said.

However, a second notice and instruction to remove the hoop has since been sent.

“I think it’s not an obstruction because it’s aligned with the light pole,” Renee said.

“If a car was there, she (the truck driver) would have hit it. It’s just nasty.

Renee said she received no response to her emails to the council.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Casey City Council for comment.
