Newlywed Carrie Symonds was buoyed by her “status upgrade” as a prime minister’s wife and was “determined not to stay in the background” when she met the Bidens yesterday, a body language expert has explained.
Boris and Carrie met President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill for a beach walk in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, ahead of the start of the G7 summit today.
After an awkward start with Carrie chasing the others as they set out, the PR guru took control of the situation and “set the pace” eager to confirm her position by mimicking the Bidens’ confident hand.
British body language expert Judi James told FEMAIL: “New bride Carrie seemed determined to register a status upgrade at the G7, showed up in a striking flame red dress and matching shoes and even took the lead in taking the group along. or set the pace as they walked in front of the cameras.”
Later, Ms. Johnson showed her “sense of spontaneity” when she kicked off her shoes to paddle in the water with Dr. Biden, while one-year-old son Wilfred played on the shore.
BACK: Boris initially walked ahead of the group and seemed oblivious that his wife was trailing according to Judi, but this brief problem was quickly rectified
SET THE PACE: When Carrie caught up with her, she strode ahead of her husband and the Bidens and confidently led the way on the beach walk
Carrie, 33, cut an elegant figure in a £325 scarlet LK Bennett gown as she walked hand-in-hand with the Prime Minister and joined President Joe and his wife Dr. Jill added before the meeting.
Initially, the new Mrs. Johnson followed the rest of the group.
“Boris didn’t seem to have any problem at the back of the grid at first, he strode forward and entertained his other guests,” explained Judi.
“But when Carrie finally overtook alongside, we see her almost appearing to the front like a race car that has finally managed to overlap its opponents and take the lead.”
Judi also suggested that Boris and Carrie mirror Biden’s hand during their walk.
“Boris’ PDAs are usually absent or look clunky, but Carrie’s body language suggests she’s decided to take matters into her own hands and create a sturdy closure similar to the Bidens,” she claimed.
Mimicking THE BIDENS’ PDA: Judi said Carrie seemed determined to put on a ‘confident’ display with her new husband, holding his hand tightly in a way that mimicked the Bidens
BIDENS PUT UP A PRESIDENTIAL DISPLAY: While Carrie and Boris held hands as they walked, it lacked the Bidens’ sense of ease, who looked more “presidential”
“Her raised chin and broad, congruent smile exude confidence. Her outfits so far also seem to reflect a more visually assertive approach, with strong block colors like Wednesday’s mustard dress and yesterday’s emphatically confident and striking red dress.’
Judi noted that Joe and Jill have “a more presidential, POTUS and FLOTUS equanimity-driven power struggle here, walking side by side with their hands clasped between their torsos.”
“This more assertive and unified status approach to political leadership may even have inspired Carrie and made her more determined not to stay in the background,” the expert added.
After drinking tea together, she saw Carrie take off her shoes to dip her toes in the water, along with her American counterpart, who did the same.
CHIN RAISED, CONFIDENT SMILE: Carrie held her head up, looking confident and composed, Judi noted, even as she walked out on the sand with Jill Biden.
‘FAMILY PORTRAIT’ TO CREATE A SENSE OF INTIMACY: The way Ms Johnson placed her son on the beach and stood in the shallows with Dr Biden gave the impression of familiarity
‘ANTI-FORMAL’ BEHAVIOR: ‘Barefoot Bride’ Carrie wanted to give the impression of a relaxed rapport with Dr. Biden during their time playing on the beach, Judi . said
Both women laughed and joked together as Boris and Carrie’s one-year-old son Wilfred sat happily on the sand.
Judi commented: “It seemed very much like Carrie had set the agenda in terms of the barefoot beach walk, complete with a paddle in the sea.
“She created a really strong family atmosphere here, by having baby Wilfred sit on the sand between herself and Jill, making their poses almost look like a family day at the seaside.
“Carrie was the barefoot bride at her wedding and she seemed eager to transition to a rather anti-formality, sense of spontaneity here as well,” the body language expert added.
“In terms of PR, it created the appearance of a very quick rapport and if Jill took off her shoes and paddled while wearing a smart dress and jacket, it would have created a perfect, casual-looking moment between the two women with Wilfred deft to it.” breaking ice,” she concluded.
MAKE A STATEMENT: “Carrie’s outfits so far also seem to reflect a more visually assertive approach, with strong block colors like the mustard dress on Wednesday (pictured) and the emphatically confident and striking red dress yesterday,” the expert said.
