A man was shot and his home doused in petrol during a horror home invasion as police searched for a group of eight men.

Emergency services were rushed to a home on Mary Wade Place in Carnes Hill, about 40 kilometers south-west of Sydney’s central business district, at around 12.45am on Tuesday.

A 25-year-old man who had been shot in the leg was treated at home before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable but serious condition.

New South Wales Police said the man had been shot twice.

Officers were told eight men wearing face coverings forced their way into the home.

Gasoline was poured into the house but it did not catch fire.

The group then fled the home in two separate vehicles and another car parked in the driveway suffered gunshot damage.

New South Wales Police believe the incident was targeted and have launched an investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Liverpool Police or Crime Stoppers.
