Sydney Trains announced on Sunday evening that T4 trains were back to normal, ahead of the start of the working week.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths and police have checked the speed at which the train was travelling.

It is understood that an unexpected gust of wind may have thrown the pram off the platform and into the path of the oncoming train.

At the time the train was travelling from Cronulla to the city and was not scheduled to stop at Carlton Station.

The station remained closed on Sunday night.

New South Wales Police Superintendent Paul Dunstan said the parents apparently took their hands off the pram for “a very brief period” as it rolled onto the tracks.

Dunstan said police were investigating what caused the stroller to tip over and said it could have been something as simple as a “gust of wind.”

He said the father “went into parent mode to save his two young daughters” after realising the train had gone onto the tracks.

“It was a heroically brave act as a father… and it cost him his life,” he said.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, who lives 100 metres from the station, said the father died while carrying out an “extraordinary and instinctive act of bravery”.

“He gave his own life to try to save his children,” he said.

Mr Minns described the incident as a “terrible, terrible tragedy” for surviving relatives and first responders.

Police arrived a few minutes after receiving the call from triple zero and could “hear crying” coming from under the car.

Mr Dunstan said it was “good luck more than anything” that the young woman was able to escape the tragedy relatively unscathed.

“She was kind of between the tracks (because of) the way she had fallen and she was practically intact,” he said.

Mr Dunstan said the mother was “obviously very traumatised”.

“She is clearly in shock and struggling to come to terms with what has happened today,” he said.

Two hours after the incident, emergency services were seen at the station as they began the gruelling task of removing bodies from beneath the train.

NSW Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious and officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the cause of the deaths of the father and daughter (pictured, officers at the station).

Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said all relevant information, including security footage, had been handed over to police to assist their investigation.

Mr Longland said the train would not stop at the station on the way to Bondi Junction.

“(The train) was approaching the station with caution, so our drivers have instructions to drive to ensure that there are no incidents on the platform,” he said.

“These types of incidents are incredibly rare, but clearly, the results are absolutely tragic.”

Mr Longland said Sydney Trains was working to restore regular services early in the working week on Monday morning.

He added that the train driver and other staff were receiving support.

One passenger reportedly tried to flag down the driver to warn him of the danger, but was unsuccessful.

A passenger in the fifth carriage of the train told Seven News that while he did not see what happened, it was “disturbing” that children were involved.
