Carlos Alcaraz continued his long march to this year’s Wimbledon singles final by claiming a four-set victory against Tommy Paul on Court No. 1 on Tuesday afternoon.
The defending champion was upset by Paul’s compatriot Frances Tiafoe in their third-round clash and also needed five sets to overcome Ugo Humbert in their round-of-16 tie.
Falling a set behind after a fast start by the US No. 2, Alcaraz lost his serve in the first game of the second set.
But the third game marked the beginning of a momentum shift, with Paul only able to win one of the next five games before Alcaraz took the second set.
Early in the third set, Alcaraz was the one who took the initial break, before the American immediately broke his serve.

The world number 13 was able to win the first set, but struggled to dominate Court No. 1.
The battle between the two men was as close as their previous encounter would suggest, with Alcaraz and Paul each claiming two wins over their rival.
But when Paul faltered in the third set, Alcaraz began to look like he was at his best and took the lead, before storming into the fourth set with a series of breaks of Alcaraz’s serve.
