Carl Beech, the fantasist behind the fake VIP pedophile probe, has been detained for 18 years for abuse of justice and fraud
A fantasist whose repeated lies have destroyed life and has damaged the reputation of the high-profile men he has been wrongly accused of murderers and pedophiles has been stuck for 18 years.
The Metropolitan Police spent £ 2 million investigating Carl Beech's allegations that he had been sadistically raped and abused by famous Westminster figures in the 1970s and 1980s.
He was sentenced to 18 years in prison today, as Judge Mr. Goss told him: & # 39; Your accusations have corrupted reputations by maliciously making the most serious false accusations against prominent former officials who are no longer alive.
& # 39; You acted on motives of financial gain, personal pleasure, malice and seeking attention. You have expressed no regrets and I accept the limited expressions of regret that you have made for your violations. & # 39;
The court heard a series of heartbreaking victim statements from the victims of Beech and their families, with the wife of former Interior Minister Leon Brittan giving a devastating statement about the impact of the lies and the blundering police investigation that followed.
Lady Brittan said the & # 39; completely false accusations and smears of the worst kind & # 39; have ruined the last weeks of her husband's life.
Beech, depicted in a court sketch, will serve nine years before he is eligible for release
Lady Diana Brittan, whose deceased husband Lord Brittan was falsely accused by Beech of heinous crimes including rape and torture
The trial condemned today was attended by Daniel Janner QC, whose father, late Labor Lord Lord Janner, was wrongly accused by Beech and former MP Harvey Proctor, who was mistakenly smeared as a murderer by the fantasist
In a statement that was read today in court, Lady Brittan wrote: & I felt that he became entangled in a totally unjustified witch hunt that took its toll on him and me.
& # 39; The impact of these terrible allegations on the entire global network of anyone involved in such matters is indescribable, unforeseeable and infinite. & # 39;
Lady Brittan said her husband was alone in the hospital, terminally ill from cancer, when the BBC released an interview with Beech, then only known as & # 39; Nick & # 39 ;. On the day of his death she had broadcasters outside her front door.
She continued: & # 39; I was so worried that I even had to arrange security for his funeral, something that no widow should do.
& # 39; Losing someone you love is bad enough in itself, but it was really terrible in these circumstances. & # 39;
& # 39; Just six weeks after his death, our two houses in London and Yorkshire were raided by the Metropolitan Police carrying out search orders … the experience that my home in London was searched by 12 police officers for 12 hours was traumatic.
& # 39; At the same time our house in Yorkshire was searched for two days. There the attic, the garage and the garden and hedges were combed through. The whole house was turned upside down and questions were asked about & # 39; newly turned earth & # 39 ;. Many personal belongings were removed. & # 39;
She praised the Daily Mail for questioning the claims, which the police wrongly & # 39; credible and true & # 39; had mentioned at a press conference.
Lady Brittan said: & # 39; My husband's name has now been erased, but he will never know it.
& # 39; As a lawyer, he always believed in the legal system – just like me, as a former magistrate. But the system has abandoned him and my family. & # 39;
Carl Beech was convicted for 12 counts for falsifying the trial and one for fraud
She repeated a statement from Lord Brittan's rabbi, Baroness Julia Neuberger, who spoke to the former politician in his final weeks.
Baroness Neuberger said: “The effect was cruel – he felt desperately sick, cut off from a large part of his social and business circle, and traduced. It had a powerful effect on a brave man. He was denied the dignified death he deserved. & # 39;
Lady Brittan said the claims were traveling all over the world and that her grandchildren had to be protected from the lies.
Carl Beech, 51, repeatedly told officers that he had been abused in the 1970s and 1980s by a series of prominent figures from politics, the army, and the security forces.
Among the falsely accused former nurse were the 91-year-old Norman veteran Field Marshal Lord Bramall, the late Lord Brittan and former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, all of whom had raided their homes in the investigation of the Midland operation of the Metropolitan Police.
Holiday photos refute Beech's claim that he had a lifelong fear of water and could not swim
Beech, a 51-year-old former nurse, made malicious claims about men, including the 91-year-old Norman veteran Field Marshal Lord Bramall, the late Lord Brittan and former Tory MP Harvey Proctor.
All three men had their houses searched by police during the Midland probe operation, which was set up in 2014 to investigate the divorced father of his allegations.
On Monday, Beech was convicted by a Newcastle Crown Court jury of 12 counts for disrupting the trial and one for fraud.
Prosecutor Tony Badenoch, QC, said during his hearing: & # 39; In this case, the behavior of the suspect amounted to cynical manipulation of the criminal justice system on an unprecedented scale. & # 39;
He said the crimes were a & # 39; unparalleled cruelty and contempt & # 39; to those he wrongly accused.
Badenoch added: & # 39; These violations were motivated by completely selfish purposes. & # 39;
& # 39; I have never been so badly injured in the army as I am because of these allegations & # 39 ;: Norman veteran Lord Bramall, 91, said that at his age he thought he & # 39; could no longer hurt & & # 39; 39; until the police raided his house
Norman veteran Lord Bramall, whose wife with Alzheimer's died during the investigation before his name was erased, told how to move her through his house while the police searched the spot for & # 39; evidence & # 39 ;.
One of Beech's ridiculous claims was that he had been raped and tortured by Field Marshal Lord Bramall and the heads of MI5 and MI6 on Salisbury Plain.
As part of Operation Midland, Lord Bramall's house was raided by 20 officers and he was carefully interviewed, even though he pointed out that there was no evidence of evidence against him.
Lord Bramall & # 39; s police interview. He feared he would die before Beech was brought to justice
Today in court, Lord Bramall's statement was read by his lawyer Drew Pettifer, in which he said that Beech had hurt him more than ever in his years of distinguished military service.
His statement was made before the trial because he wasn't sure if he would live long enough to see Beech convicted.
Lord Bramall said in his statement: & # 39; This is especially what really upset me; my track record speaks for itself. In the service of my queen and country I have done everything that is required of me. I suffered both physically and emotionally and I did this without regret or complaint. I thought I couldn't hurt anymore.
& # 39; I can honestly say that I have never been so badly wounded in my military time than Nick's allegations that formed the basis for Operation Midland. & # 39;
He said he was home with his wife when the Met executed their search warrant on March 4, 2015.
Supporting: Lord Bramall, with his son Nicolas and wife Avril, who had Alzheimer's disease
Lord Bramall said: & My wife was then bound to bed when she had Alzheimer's disease. When the police first arrived, I really had no idea why they were there and I welcomed them with the words: "How nice to see you". & # 39;
He added: & # 39; The police continued to search my house, forcing us to move my wife from room to room in her bed while they searched our house.
& # 39; My wife constantly asked me what was going on and what I had done. It was very difficult to explain to her what was going on because of the scarcity of information I had received.
& # 39; It is important that the court knows that I live in a very small and quiet village.
& # 39; The Metropolitan police who indicated 20 to search someone's house would certainly attract attention, especially if some of those officers went to lunch at the only village pub.
Nod Needless to say, the fact that the search and the intervention of the police's own media department meant that I was almost immediately the subject of speculation with the national press.
Lord Bramall was not good enough to appear during the trial and provided evidence through a link
He wrote: & # 39; The impact of the allegations was exacerbated by the Metropolitan Police Service which automatically accepted Nick & # 39; s completely unconfirmed allegations and then described them as & # 39; credible and true & # 39 ;.
& # 39; One of the significant effects of giving Nick & # 39; s allegations so much weight was to essentially reverse the burden of proof, and encourage the press and the wider public to speculate about my guilt.
& # 39; Nick made these devastating and monstrous accusations against me while being protected by a cloak of anonymity.
& # 39; Meanwhile, everything about me from my character, reputation and record of public opinion was disputed. & # 39;
He acknowledged that the Metropolitan Police had apologized to him, but added: & # 39; Mud sticks. & # 39;
Sir Edward Heath's grandson said that allegations throw a blot on the land and that the police & # 39; should be ashamed & # 39; because they had credibility
Beech claimed that former Prime Minister Edward Heath. His Godson came to court today
The godson of former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath says that the case has harmed Britain and that the police should be ashamed of themselves & # 39 ;.
During the whooping police probe, police investigated Beech's claims that former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath abused him on a double bed in his Morning Cloud yacht.
However, it was only during the Beech investigation that the narrow racing boat only offered space for hammocks and not a double bed.
In his victim impact statement before the court today, Sir Edward Heath & # 39; s godson Lincoln Seligman said that the former prime minister was always as he remains, completely and categorically innocent of these corrupt and bad allegations & # 39 ;.
He said the & # 39; clearly ridiculous & # 39; accusations against his godfather & # 39; have cast a terrible stain on this land & # 39 ;.
Mr. Seligman condemned the Metropolitan Police, Wiltshire Police and politicians & # 39; who were ashamed of themselves & # 39; because they believed Beech's accusations.
He said: & # 39; It is unlikely that this damage will ever be undone. & # 39;
Former Tory MP Harvey Proctor breaks down while describing that he lost his home and job due to accusations from someone he had never met
Former Conservative MP Harvey Proctor, who was dragged into Operation Midland when Beech mistakenly called him an abuser, told the court that the fantasist is a & # 39; despicable vendetta & # 39; against him.
Beech claimed that Mr. Proctor tried to castrate him with a pocket knife and another boy named & # 39; Scott & # 39; killed for him by stabbing him with a kitchen knife for 40 minutes. The claims were fully invented and Mr. Proctor had never even met Beech.
The politician said today that the reputational damage inflicted on him was greatly increased by the actions of the Metropolitan Police Service.
He told the court that the lies of Beech & # 39; intentional and malicious & # 39; were, and were made without knowing the suspect personally, saying: & He knew that they would make ordinary people taunt and despise me. & # 39;
& # 39; I never met him and he has no reason to hold me resentment, but he chose to spread mean and false rumors about me. & # 39;
Harvey Proctor, pictured today in court, said the way the police investigated the case wrongly blamed the men's damage
Mr. Proctor also launched a fierce attack on the Metropolitan Police.
He said: & # 39; They've started and an investigation I've been told has cost millions of pounds to the taxpayer. They described his ridiculous stories as credible and true.
& # 39; The police also played a role in disclosing that I had been detained twice for his allegations and my house was looking for evidence.
& # 39; There was no evidence against me from Mr. Beech's imaginative stories. & # 39;
He said the police actions against him & # 39; intentional and malicious & # 39; goods.
Proctor said: & # 39; There was clear evidence that Mr. Beech's allegations were lies.
& # 39; They were contradicted by his own mother, they were stories that should have been torpedoed by elementary police investigations. & # 39;
His voice broke with emotion as he continued: & I lost my house, my job, my peace of mind, and it led to the necessity of leaving the country where I had spent my entire life. & # 39;
He concluded by saying: & # 39; I have a sense of icy contempt for Mr. Carl Beech. & # 39;
The penmes with which Beech claimed that a Tory MP threatened to castrate him. In reality, his grandmother gave it to him
The lurid claims of a fantasist who destroyed the lives of innocent men and saw millions of taxpayers' money wasted on a blundering police probe
Carl Beech made a series of wild allegations against seniors against the police in 2014 – which led to a £ 2 million police investigation in which houses were raided and lives destroyed.
Beech gave the police a list of 12 alleged abusers, including D-Day veteran Lord Bramall, former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, former Foreign Minister Lord Brittan, former Harvey Proctor MP, Labor peer Lord (Greville) Janner, ex MI5 boss Sir Michael Hanley and former MI6 chef Sir Maurice Oldfield.
Under pressure in the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal, the Met Police then organized a press conference where an officer described the allegations as & # 39; credible and where & # 39 ;.
Beech wipes a tear wear as he tells the police how to see his friend & # 39; Scott & # 39; saw run over and killed by the alleged pedophile ring. Scott never existed
Carl Beech's lies: he invented extreme claims that were unraveled as the case unfolded
His claim: Ex-Tory MP Harvey Proctor tried to castrate me with a pen knife and let me keep the knife.
The truth: The knife belonged to his grandmother and kept it in a & # 39; happy memories & # 39; box.
His claim: VIP pedophiles abused me in the Dolphin Square pool.
The truth: He had never been to Dolphin Square before and used a Culture Club video to make a completely incorrect sketch of the pool.
His claim: Pedophiles took advantage of my fear of water.
The truth: He is not afraid of water and photos let him swim all his life.
His claim: I have to live with a litany of injuries.
The truth: His body has no evidence of injury.
His claim: My fellow victim Fred will confirm my story.
The truth: & # 39; Fred & # 39; s & # 39; e-mail account has been created by Beech.
His claim: I was abused by Labor MP in the Carlton Club.
The truth: Only conservative members of parliament can attend the Carlton Club.
His claim: I didn't Google my abusers.
The truth: His computer showed widespread evidence of research.
The police investigation was later stored in a report by former Judge Sir Richard Henriques, who found 43 major shortcomings in the way the case was handled.
Just six weeks after the death of Lord Brittan in 2015, officers invaded his home and even took the extraordinary step of searching his garden in a fingertip in search of signs of & # 39; disturbed earth & # 39 ;.
No one was ever accused and it later turned out that the attention of seeker Beech was fully invented. An investigation into him later revealed that he himself is a pedophile who had dirty images of child abuse on his computer.
Beech's claims started in 2012 when he went to the Wiltshire police with allegations that he was abused in 1976 by his stepfather Major Ray Beech.
He told them that Major Beech took him to Erskine Barracks in Wiltshire, where he was abused by shameful TV star Jimmy Savile and other men he did not mention.
The Wiltshire investigation found no evidence and was closed in 2013, but Beech still launched a claim for compensation for criminal injury and asked detective agent Mark Lewis for a crime number for the claim form. He later received £ 22,000 with which he bought an expensive Ford Mustang car.
In 2014, Beech went back to the police, this time the Metropolitan Police, and his & # 39; extraordinary story & # 39; had become shockingly graphic and turned into a who & # 39; s who from the political and military establishment in the 1970s.
In 20 hours of police interviews, Beech accused former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath of abusing him on his yacht, Morning Cloud.
He said the former Interior Minister Lord Brittan raped him while holding his head in the bath and Lord Bramall also raped him in barracks, forests and the village of Imber on the Salisbury plain, where the army gives live shooting training .
Beech said the late army commander Sir Roland Gibbs and General Sir Hugh Beach, now 96, were also part of the same abuse sessions.
His most serious allegations were that he witnessed the murder of three boys, one of them by Harvey Proctor.
All claims were fully invented.
Defiance of Exaro couple that kicked & # 39; lies & # 39;
Journalists behind the scandalous investigative website that attacked the lies of pedophile fantasist Carl Beech should be prosecuted, said one of his victims this week.
Harvey Proctor called for an investigation into the senior figures behind Exaro, including Mark Watts, the site's former editor-in-chief, and Mark Conrad, a reporter who accompanied Beech to his police interview after he presented him 42 images of potential & abusers & # 39; had shown.
Mark Watts and Mark Conrad
Exaro – now defunct – produced a series of & # 39; exclusives & # 39; about the existence of a pedophile ring operating in Westminster, largely based on Beech's testimony. Mr. Proctor said: & # 39; Mark Watts and Mark Conrad disguise themselves as journalists … they reported fabricated and manipulated information. & # 39; Yesterday, Mr. Watts insisted that Beech's beliefs were unsafe.
Mr. Conrad, a friend of labor deputy leader, Tom Watson, was interviewed at his home three days earlier this year by the Northumbria police about his dealings with Beech.
He admitted he had doubts about Beech's allegations, but insisted: & # 39; I have nothing to apologize for. & # 39;
Exaro was closed in 2016.
The Met's subsequent investigation had at least 20 officers who worked full-time for 16 months, took 370 witness statements, launched 1,700 actions, and produced 1,860 documents, some of which were hundreds of pages long.
Lord Bramall, who was then 91, had his house in Hampshire searched for 10 hours and was still under investigation when his wife and more than 60 years died.
The house of Lord Brittan was searched and he was not released when he died in 2015.
The house of Harvey Proctor was searched and things were taken away by detectives, some of whom were part of a specialized murder team.
Beech took the police by saying he had a witness to confirm his allegations, renamed him Aubrey, Fred and John, and sent emails from detectives that he himself had written as a witness.
Because nothing was wrong, Operation Midland was dropped after 16 months without anyone being charged.
It was then that the Northumbria police were called in to investigate Beech and disconnected his web of deception.
In 2016, Northumbria Police invaded the rented three-bedroom house in Gloucester.
During the ride, they discovered a new white Ford Mustang convertible that was purchased with the compensation he received and seized various electronic devices.
While walking through, they discovered a collection of 342 images of child abuse, many of which are at the most serious level of category A.
There was also a video of a boy using a toilet that Beech had captured by setting up a secret camera.
Carl Beech claimed that the abuse started when he was in primary school, but he looked happy on the then school photos & # 39; s
School records showed that Beech was always in school when he said he had been abused
He initially denied that the images were his, investigators focused on his teenage son and even his mother, Rev Charmian Beech.
He was tried at the Worcester Crown Court for five counts of making indecent images and one of voyeurism, but he did not come to a court last summer, instead he fled to a remote forest shelter in northern Sweden, where he had two cabins bought.
For eight weeks, he fled justice, traveled by train, and checked into hotels under hired names until he was finally caught at Gothenburg station and returned to the UK to face justice.
Harvey Proctor promises to resist Tom Watson at the next election in revenge for Labor & # 39; s substitute back support from Carl Beech & # 39; s lies about the VIP pedophile ring
One of the former politicians who is mistakenly accused by a phantasist behind the fake VIP pedophile claims, will resist the deputy labor leader Tom Watson in the next election.
Former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, falsely accused of murder by Carl Beech, is furious that Watson reinforces the false accusations by meeting Beech, making statements in Parliament and writing to the police.
After Watson refused to abandon the scandal, Mr. Proctor said that he was preparing to take him to the next election in an attempt to rob him of his seat in Parliament.
Tom Watson, pictured earlier this week, is under pressure to resign from fake claims by a fantasist behind the failed investigation into the VIP peadophilic ring
Watson, who has been West Bromwich East MP since 2001, has been the target of anger from some within the Labor party over his alleged undermining of Jeremy Corbyn.
The 72-year-old told The Daily Telegraph: & # 39; Tom Watson is not supposed to be in parliament. He has shown that he has no judgment. As a result, I am considering standing against him at the next general election and hopefully he will lose his seat.
& # 39; It would not be a loss to the PvdA and a huge win on all fronts. & # 39;
Mr. Proctor has previously called on Watson to transfer his telephone logs and e-mail history to the Select Committee on Home Affairs to increase his involvement in the VIP sex ring & # 39; witch hunt & # 39; to judge.
The victims of Carl Beech
Edwin Bramall joined the army in 1943 and stormed the beaches of Normandy as a second lieutenant. He fought until the end of the war and received a Military Cross.
Zijn woordvoerder zei: 'Hij is een slachtoffer van Beech. De man is een fraudeur en heeft vreselijke schade aangericht. En natuurlijk voor Tom zeker. & # 39;
Maar in een interview met de BBC gisteren deze week, mijn best om te proberen gerechtigheid te krijgen voor veel slachtoffers van kindermishandeling en daar ga ik niet tegen in. & # 39;
