And while Carey didn’t address the controversy during the interview, she did talk about the real-life couple’s union.
Carey said, “Their bond was profound. They lit each other. You can hear it.
“There are tapes of them exchanging anecdotes and it’s like they’re dancing.”
The arrangement may have been unorthodox, in that Montealegre accepted her husband’s affairs, but Carey insists there was more to it, saying love was a supernatural attunement to each other.
She emphasizes, “This was the most intense preparation I’ve ever done for a film,” Mulligan continues. There were the technicalities – capturing Felicia’s accent and attitude – but the most important thing, she says, was tapping into the Felicia-Lenny connection.”
Carey said she and Bradley had their own way of getting their connection for the film.
Operating far outside her usual instinctive process, Mulligan joined Cooper for a five-day “dream workshop.”
Shaking her head, she said, “I think Bradley has been doing this kind of thing for a long time, using your dreams to connect your subconscious to the character’s, but it was new to me. But I had to go all in.”

How did it come about? During the interview, it becomes clear that Bradley had Carey in his sights for his project after seeing her during a performance of Dennis Kelly’s one-woman show when the stage curtain fell on her head, but she carried on regardless.
And in an interview Vogue conducted with Bradley prior to the actors’ strike, he said, “I knew her abilities. All I asked of her was to do the preparation with me; I said, “Do you want to go down this road where we’re basically going to bare our souls to each other?”
“And she said, ‘Okay, let’s do it, I’m ready.’

Bradley was in the audience when the giant stage curtain fell on Mulligan’s head.
She crawled out from under it and continued with the show. Immediately after taking her final bow, Cooper rushed backstage to find Mulligan dazed and likely concussed.
He demanded that they go to the hospital immediately. They did, but it’s thought the incident stuck with Cooper, and the moral was: Carey Mulligan doesn’t give up.
