Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson didn’t like some squeaking from New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox and decided to take a cheap shot at him in their Stanley Cup playoff matchup.

Late in the first period, with New York on the power play, center Vincent Trocheck was able to score a tie-breaking goal to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.

As he skated to celebrate with his teammates, Fox looked in Wilson’s direction. It’s unclear whether he said anything to his Washington counterpart, but either way, Wilson took offense to something.

He grabbed Fox as he skated and hit him with his left hand near the face.

The rest of the Rangers, who were celebrating behind the goal, came forward to help their team-mate and a scrum ensued.

Wilson still had his arm around Fox as the Rangers attempted to take the enforcer away from their star defender.

Finally, the two separated, and Fox looked disheveled as he skated away.

Wilson received a two-minute minor penalty for manhandling that was not taken well by the Capitals’ home fans.

Finally, the Caps tied the game with a goal by Hendrix Lapierre in the second half.

But the Rangers, who dominated throughout the series, finished off the sweep with goals from Artemi Panarin and Jack Roslovic in the third period.

That gave New York the series, as they swept Washington four games to none and now await their next opponent in the second round.

The Rangers play the winner of the series between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders. Carolina leads that series three games to one, with Game 5 scheduled for a puck drop at 7:30 ET on Tuesday night.
