Matthew McConaughey will star Amziah King’s rivalsa crime thriller written and directed by The vast night helmer Andrew Patterson.
Black Bear Pictures and Heyday Films are producing the upcoming feature film and Black Bear International will start international presale at the Cannes film market next week. WME Independent handles US rights.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but McConaughey will play the title role of Amziah King in the feature film, set in the remote areas of Oklahoma. David Heyman (Gravitythe Harry Potter franchise) through his Heyday Films, along with Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler. Executive producers include Rob Silva of Heyday and John Friedberg and Christopher Casanova of Black Bear.
Amzia King will be Patterson’s sequel to his well-received feature debut. The vast night premiered at the 2019 Slamdance Film Festival and was picked up worldwide by Amazon Studios. The 1950s sci-fi mystery won Patterson the Bingham Ray breakthrough director award at the 2021 Gotham Awards and earned him an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, shared with co-writer Craig W. Sanger.
The film joins Black Bear’s surging film at Cannes alongside Max Minghella’s high-concept thriller Shell with Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson and Kaia Gerberand; the romantic epic On Fast Horses with Daisy Edgar Jones, Jacob Elordi and Will Poulter; and an untitled Guy Ritchie-directed action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, and Eiza González.
