An urgent search is underway for a teenager missing in the waters of the Torres Strait.

Queensland police said a 13-year-old boy swam about 500 meters to shore on Saibai Island, about four kilometers south of Papua New Guinea, and raised the alarm overnight, around 4am.

He told police his 16-year-old partner tried to swim from a disabled boat overnight but failed to reach shore in rainy weather.

Police launched a search and rescue operation on Thursday morning.

Thursday Island Water Police were immediately activated and began a search and rescue with support from general task teams.
